50. A summer evening at Milton Malsor-05.07.19

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2019 > 50. A summer evening at Milton Malsor-05.07.19
A superb summer's evening got me out to nearby Milton Malsor. Unfortunately, there were only three freight workings that all came later in the evening within fifteen minutes of each other and all on the up.

319219, 319214 & 319441, LN 17.53 London Euston-Northampton (2N51, 3L), Milton Malsor SP738560
London Northwestern retain a small number of ex. Thameslink class 319 to supplement their services during peak commuter times. Here, 319219, 319214 and 319441 approach Northampton with the 17.53 from Euston, a journey that has taken seventy minutes. This location is just near to the village of Milton Malsor and at a spot that has been opened up by Network Rail's vegetation removal strategy. Previously, this shot would have been impossible due to the rampant tree growth on the embankment, however, as can be seen, they will need to attend to the site again given the re-growth already in evidence.

350267, LN 18.16 London Euston-Northampton (1N71, 1L), Milton Malsor SP738560
350267 in the 'new' London Northwestern livery leads one its stablemates in the old London Midland livery past Milton Malsor just on the approach to Northampton. It is forming the 18.16 Euston to Northampton 'fast' service that runs on the down fast non-stop as far as Ledburn Junction when it that moves to the slow stopping at Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes, Wolverton and arriving in Northampton (in theory) sixty-two minutes after it left.

350130, LN 16.05 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (9Y20, 4L), Milton Malsor SP738560
In bright early evening sunlight, 350130 leaves Northampton behind as it approaches Milton Malsor working the 9Y20 16.05 Liverpool Lime Street to Euston service. Since the new timetable was introduced in May, Northampton (and a number of other stations) now enjoy direct trains to and from Merseyside for the first time in many years.

319441, 319214 & 319219, LN 19.14 Northampton-Bletcheley CS ECS (5B51), Milton Malsor SP738560
Having just worked down to Northampton as a commuter working, the trio of class 319s composed 319441, 319214 and 319219 return to Bletchley carriage sidings as the 5B51. The ECS working is seen approaching Milton Malsor just south of Northampton. It is likely that these old units, dating from the late 1980s, will be handed back to their owner soon as new stock is introduced to the London Northwestern network.

350372 & 350258, LN 18.21 London Euston-Rugeley Trent Valley, cancelled from Hednesford (9K72, 12L), Milton Malsor
With the sun getting helpfully low in the sky, 350372 and 350258 form the 18.21 Euston to Rugeley Trent Valley. These new workings, introduced from the summer timetable in May, involve the trains going into Birmingham New Street and splitting with the rear set going back out again to Rugeley. Unfortunately, something went wrong a little later in the day with this service, as the train was terminated at Hednesford having arrived twelve minutes late.

350257 & 350373, LN 17.01 Crewe & 16.33 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (9W26 & 1L85, 5L), Milton Malsor
A train that came together at Birmingham New Street composed of 350257 and 350373. The first set arrived first as the 16.33 from Liverpool Lime Street but had to wait nearly ten minutes for the arrival of the back set that arrived late in as the 17.01 from Crewe. The two sets then continue to Euston and are seen passing Milton Malsor between Northampton and Roade.

66745, 15.49 Garston Car Terminal-Dagenham Dock (6L48), Milton Malsor
66745 'Modern Railways The First 50 Years' leads the empty 15.49 Garston car terminal to Dagenham Dock car train. These wagons make a heck of a racket when they are not loaded with vehicles with a lot of noise from the resonating steel panels! The train is seen passing Milton Malsor that, as the milepost indicates, is sixty-two and a half miles from Euston. The sun is getting low in the evening sky now but does offer some lovely soft and warm light that makes a welcome change from the usual harsh and contrasty light of high summer days.

66505, 18.58 Lawley Street-Felixstowe North (4L73), Milton Malsor
I love the light of a warm summer's evening as the sun gets down to the horizon. It picks out detail that is not visible during the day when the sun is high overhead and very strong. 66505 brings the 4L73 18.58 Lawley Street (Birmingham) to Felixstowe North Freightliner past Milton Malsor just south of Northampton. This train was well loaded with the class 66 working hard on the 1:200 gradient towards Roade.

70002, 16.15 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L96), Milton Malsor
70002 was only a short distance and a few minutes behind the previous freight here and Milton Malsor between Northampton and Roade. It is leading the Friday only 16.15 Trafford Park to Felixstowe North. The picture is taken from the top of my ladder leaning against the palisade fencing that is of a slightly unusual type with no spikes on the top. Taken using my Sigma 80-200 zoom lens has brought the unusual spire of West Hunsbury's St Benedict's Church into the image on the far right.
