What a foul day! I had to nip into work and this coincided with the passing of The Crewe Open Day and Medieval Chester railtour operated by UK Railtours. Unfortunately, this was heavily delayed on leaving Euston but it did make it in the end. In the evening, I took a walk through the village to see it on its return; at least the weather had improved by then!

66506, 08.25 Crewe Basford Hall-Felixstowe North (4L93), Wilson`s Crossing
In weather more reminiscent of November than flaming June, 66506 'Crewe Regeneration' passes Wilson's crossing to the north of Northampton with the 4L93 08.25 Crewe Basford Hall to Felixstowe Freightliner. I stood at this spot wearing, jeans, boots, two top layers, and my GORE-TEX jacket to protect myself from the wind and rain!

D1924 & D1944, outward leg of The Crewe Open Day and The Medieval Chester, 08.26 London-Euston Crewe & Medieval Chester (1Z40), Wilson`s crossing
Within ten minutes of leaving Euston D1944 (47501) 'Craftsman' that is the second locomotive here, failed and was stopped at Willesden. UK Railtours 1Z40 trip to Crewe was taking taking people to the open day being held at the Crewe Diesel Depot HQ of Locomotive Services Ltd. For those not interested in that, the train then continued on to Chester for a few hours before returning. Within an hour of the failure, D1924 (47810) 'Crewe Diesel Depot' had been removed from the rear of the train and attached to the front. Now double-headed, the train is seen in the pouring rain leaving Northampton past Wilson's Crossing forty-five minutes down with it eventually arriving at Crewe and later Chester some twenty-two minutes adrift.

66721, 08.12 Birch Coppice-Felixstowe North (4L29), Wilson`s crossing
66721 'Harry Beck' brings the 4L29 08.12 Birch Coppice to Felixstowe North Freightliner past Wilson's crossing north of Northampton. The weather was appalling with a cold wind blowing and driving rain; the things we do in pursuit of our hobby! This GBRf locomotive has certainly brightened up the dull scene resplendent in its one-off livery showing part of the tube network map as created by Harry Beck after whom it is named

350127 & 350121, LN 17.05 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (9Y22, 5L), Hyde Road bridge
In the gloom of a summer's evening that should be a lot brighter than this, 350127 and 350121 pass through Roade cutting with the 17.05 Liverpool Lime Street to Euston service. Since the May timetable changes, direct trains between the two cities can be enjoyed from stations such as Northampton and Bletchley.

D1924, return leg of The Crewe Open Day & The Medieval Chester, 15.35 Crewe-London Euston (1Z42), Hyde Road bridge
After the drama of the morning run with D1944 'Craftsman' failing within ten minutes of leaving Euston over, D1924 'Crewe Diesel Depot' brings the return working through Roade cutting. Disgraced D1944 is dead-in-tow on the rear of the train that is returning from Chester and Crewe following the open day at Locomotive Services Ltd. base at Crewe diesel depot. As can be seen, after a foul day, some late evening sun has just broken through the cloud to illuminate the very top of the cutting.
