A trip to Birmingham to see a performance of Captain Corelli's Mandolin at the Rep. Unfortunately, I went on my own as my lovely wife was poorly.

350107, LN 10.15 London Euston-Crewe & Rugeley Trent Valley (9K20, 4L), Northampton station
My train from Northampton to Birmingham New Street rolls into Northampton station. Since the new timetable was introduced a couple of weeks previously, a number of London Northwestern services go through to Rugeley Trent Valley via Cannock and Hednesford. This service pattern often requires two-set trains, such as this one, to split at Birmingham New Street with the other portion continuing to Crewe. In this particular case, this was the 9K20 10.15 Euston to Crewe and Rugeley Trent Valley

170506, LN 11.12 Shrewsbury-Birmingham New Street (1G27, 3L), Birmingham New Street station
Whilst I do not appreciate the revised London Northwestern livery applied to most of its class 350 fleet, West Midlands Railway livery looks a lot better. In the new livery with its gold paintwork, 170506 arrives into Birmingham New Street with the terminating 11.12 from Shrewsbury.

390152, VT 12.52 Edinburgh-London Euston (9M56, 6L), Birmingham New Street station
The huge new structure that sits above the platforms of Birmingham New Street station contains the vast station concourse and then above that an equally vast area of retailing and eateries. The exterior of the building is clad in these somewhat controversial stainless steel panels that have been 'dulled down' in an effort to avoid refective problems. VT's 390152 'Virgin Spirit' pauses at the station with the 12.52 Edinburgh to Euston.

170501, LN 16.46 Four Oaks-Bromsgrove (2O68, 3L), Birmingham New Street station
170501 arrives into Birmingham New Street station forming, what I believe to be, the 16.46 Four Oaks to Bromsgrove. However, I would have thought this should have been operated by an electric unit rather than by this diesel one. The back entrance of The Bullring shopping centre dominates the background of this photograph, a natural environment for my wife who, unfortunately, stayed at home today as she was afflicted by a nasty bug.

350237, LN 16.01 Crewe-London Euston (9W24, RT), Northampton station
Having travelled back from Birmingham on the 16.01 Crewe to Euston, it is seen at Northampton station with 350237 leading. When it arrived at New Street it was a very busy single set service but another set was hastily added on the rear to avoid it becoming dangerously overcrowded; well done London Northwestern!

Tickets, Northampton-Birmingham New Street-Northampton
My return tickets from Northampton to Birmingham. Both off-peak singles, bought the evening before travel, are of reasonable value. For the return journey, I travelled first class as it was only £2 more than standard. This decision is not based on it being any better in terms of service but it gives me a stronger likelihood of getting a seat.
