43185, GW 12.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington (1A16) & 43198, 11.29 Exeter St. David`s-London Paddington ECS (5Z70), London Paddington station
43185 'Great Western' looks very smart in its retro. swallow livery and this is the first time that I have managed to photograph it. Here, it sits at Paddington having arrived with the 12.00 from Bristol Temple Meads. Behind it is 43198 'Oxfordshire 2007' that has just stopped at the blocks with the 11.29 ECS run from Exeter St. David's.

Two HSTs at London Paddington. In the background, 43155 'The Red Arrows 50 Seasons of Excellence' will leave with the 1C17 14.02 to Bristol temple Meads. Meanwhile, in the foreground, 43133 has arrived at the rear of the 12.00 from Bristol.

43141, GW 14.05 London Paddington-Penzance (1C85) & 43133, GW 12.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington, London Paddington station
Under threatening skies at Paddington station, 43141 and 43133 stand side by side. The former will lead the 14.05 to Penance whereas the latter has arrived at the rear of the 12.00 from Bristol Temple Meads. This picture shows off some of the wonderful design features of Paddington station such as the superb wrought ironwork behind the vertical glazing.

Electrification work, London Paddington station
Platforms one and two are out of use as work is being undertaken on the passenger footbridge in order to facilitate the installation of the electrification paraphernalia. With these two key platforms out of use, the pressure was really on to ensure that all services could arrive and depart. Any failure or delays would cause massive problems for the station controllers.

Electrification work, London Paddington station
Work being undertaken on the passenger footbridge to prepare it for raising. This was being done so that the electrification wires could be hung at the appropriate height underneath.

An RRV (road rail vehicle) swings a bag of materials into place for the workers undertaking works a Paddington. The footbridge was being raised and the track lowered slightly in order to create the appropriate space to accommodate the 25Kv wiring on platforms one and two. I am not sure that the bearded member of the team with the dark glasses was too keen on having his picture taken!

43185, GW 12.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington & 43198, 11.29 Exeter St. David`s-London Paddington ECS (5Z70), London Paddington station
Retro painted 43185 'Great Western' is in its BR swallow livery as it sits at Paddington having arrived with the 12.00 from Bristol Temple Meads. It's a shame that in their haste to repaint the HST power car that the paint has been applied in a bit of a rush or was of poor quality judging by the amount of it flaking off. Next to the celebrity power car is 43198 that has also recently arrived leading the 5X70 11.29 ECS from Exeter St. David's.

43185, GW 12.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington, London Paddington station
I could not resist a broadside of HST power car 43185 'Great Western' at Paddington station. The IC swallow livery is a pretty good version of the one applied when these units were operated by BR in the 1980s. The swllow era was probably the zenith of BR's passenger operations when fast, smart and relatively new IC services were operated and were just what the privateers had their eyes on with their talons ready when the Major government passed the privatisation act in 1993.

Electrification work, London Paddington station
Work is underway to raise the passenger footbridge over platforms one and two at Paddington in order to facilitate the electrification equipment. I always find it quite extraordinary watching the workers at 'work' with the amount of time spent standing around, usually on their mobile 'phones, is extraordinary! This image is a good example. How many staff are there in this image and how many are actually doing anything? No wonder that there is so much disruption on the railways due to 'engineering works'!

332003, HX 14.25 London Paddington-Heathrow T5 (1T61) & 43185, GW 12.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington (1A16), London Paddington station
The glorious train shed at Paddington has undergone a huge refurbishment and renovation programme over the years, As a result of this work, it is a pleasant and airy place to be, gone are the days of it being a dark and fume filled environment. In the foreground, the 14.25 Heathrow Express service to Heathrow Terminal five waits to leave whilst, 43185 'Great Western' has arrived earlier with the 12.00 from Temple Meads. Despite many opportunities to use Heathrow Express, I have found their fares to be extortionate, even when paying advanced prices with railcards. This does smack a little of exploiting the tourist trade and taking advantage of foreign visitors who do not have the opportunity of knowledge to shop around.

Nameplate, 43155, GW 14.02 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C17), London Paddington station
The impressive nameplate attached to the side of 43135 as it stands at London Paddington. The HST will leave with the 1C17 14.02 Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads. When the HSTs are removed from service over the coming few years, I wonder what will happen to their nameplates? If the HSTs are to be cascaded elsewhere or reformed I would like to think that are retained.

43032, GW 09.18 Paignton-London Paddington (1A15), London Paddington station
43032 waits at the rear of the 09.18 Paignton to London Paddington that arrived earlier in the afternoon. Unusually, this service has arrived at platform eleven. Many services were in areas of the station they are not normally associated with, this due to the closure of platforms one and two because of engineering works associated with electrification.

43155, GW 14.02 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C17) & 332005, HX 13.57 Heathrow T5-London Paddington (1Y57), London Paddington station
At the far country end of London Paddington station, 43155 'The Red Arrows - 50 Seasons of Excellence' is now nearly twenty minutes late leaving with the 14.02 to Bristol Temple Meads. It did actually get going in the next five minutes or so. Meanwhile, 332005 arrives with the 13.57 from Heathrow Terminal five. Despite the time of day and year, I am pleasantly surprised with the lighting in this image, even more so as it is taken under Bishop's Bridge.

43172, GW 09.18 Paignton-London Paddington (1A15), London Paddington station
Adorned with its unique vinyls, 43172 'Harry Patch - The last survivor of the trenches' stands at Paddington's platform eleven with the 09.18 from Paignton. This HST was named at Bristol by Harry Patch's grandson, Roger Patch, last year in 2015 in a short ceremony at Bristol Temple Meads.

165105, GW 12.06 Worcester Foregate Street-London Paddington (1P47) & 360204, HC 13.51 Heathrow T5 London Paddington (2Y42), London Paddington station
I am not convinced that I would want to take a journey from Worcester to Paddington in a Turbostar class 165? 165105 has just done this journey having arrived at the capital with the 12.06 ex Worcester Shrub Hill. Next to it, the Heathrow Connect 13.51 service from terminal five formed by 360204 has now arrived. This is a pretty dire and oppressive part of Paddington station, I am sure that an effort could be made to paint the dark concrete roof white to brighten things up a bit?

43028, GW 08.45 Penzance-London Paddington (1A81) & 43172, GW 09.18 Paignton-London Paddington (1A15), London Paddington station
43028 has just arrived at London Paddington having worked the 1A81 08.45 from Penzance. This train has terminated at platform ten rather than the more usual one or two due to both of these being closed because of electrification works being undertaken. Next to 43028 is 43172 that terminated earlier with the 09.18 from Paignton. Having been one of 253014's power cars it has now been beating a path up and down from Paddington to all destinations in the West Country for an amazing forty years.

43003, GW 13.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington (1A18) & 43158, GW 11.24 Swansea-London Paddington (1L55), London Paddington station
With platforms one and two out of use due to engineering work, the rest of Paddington's platforms were under a bit of pressure. Here, 43003 (ex 253002) has just terminated with the 13.00 from Bristol Temple Meads. Meanwhile, 43158 arrived earlier with the 11.24 from Swansea. This scene, HSTs side by side at Paddington, is something familiar to all of us for four decades but it is something that will change dramatically over the coming couple of years.

43003, GW 13.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington (1A18) & 43158, GW 11.24 Swansea-London Paddington (1L55), London Paddington station
A final look back at Paddington station before I left to meet my wife and son in John Lewis' for afternoon tea! With platforms one and two out of use for electrification work, they are eerily devoid of trains with the rest of the station at capacity! 43003 and 43158 are at platforms two and three respectively. The first having worked the 13.00 from Temple Meads with the latter having arrived earlier with the 11.24 from Swansea.
