Our trip to Norwich by train from Sheringham. Tis year, I took my Brompton bike to enable me to take the train out to Reedham. From here I was able to ride out and get some pictures of the loco. hauled services.

156412 stands at Sheringham station waiting to leave working the 09.44 to Norwich. My wife, son and I travelled on this train all the way to it destination.

156412 forming the 09.44 Sheringham to Norwich 2S09 service has arrived at Cromer station and is being prepared to leave in the opposite direction again as far as Cromer Junction when it then heads south through the north Norfolk countryside. My family and I were travelling on this train all the way.

Greater Anglia were still experiencing a chronic shortage of units so DRS were hired in to provide loco. hauled sets to supplement their timetable. At Norwich station, 68024 'Centaur' and 68004 'Rapid' top and tail the 12.05 Norwich to Lowestoft working. My Brompton bike and I took this train to Reedham thoroughly enjoying the Mk.IIA experience!

68004 & 68024, LE 12.05 Norwich-Lowestoft (2J74), Norwich station
In Norwich station, 68004 'Rapid' sist at the head of the 2J74 12.05 to Lowestoft. Out of site on the rear is 68024 'Centaur'. A total of 7600 hp is ample to get three BR Mk.IIA moving across the flat Fenland countryside. Indeed, travelling on the train revealed that the power handle was used in short bursts and when it was it resulted in rapid acceleration.

There is no doubting who is the contractor for the loco. hauled trains operated for Greater Anglia. DRS have provided various forms of motive power and the stock. What a relief it must be for the commuters and travellers all over Norfolk to be carried in a luxury of a set of Mk.IIA stock. It's also good to see thet DRS are naming their fleet of lococ. and that they are affixing proper cast nameplates. Here at Norwich, 68024 'Rapid' waits to leave with the 12.05 to Lowestoft. In past times, one of Wester region's Warships, D832, also carried the same name as the class 68.

90007, LE 0012.0000 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (0001P0035), Norwich station
Greater Anglia's latest livery is this smart white and grey colour scheme. The branding includes the parent company's name Abellio that is itself owned by the Dutch state company Nederlandse Spoorwegen. I always think that liveries such as this look good when new and clean but they are a devil to keep clean during everyday running. 90007 'Sir John Betjeman' waits at Norwich to leave with the 12.00 to London Liverpool Street.

158813, EM 11.57 Norwich-Liverpool Lime Street (1R86), Norwich station
158813 preparing to leave Norwich's platform three with the 11.57 to Liverpool Lime Street. This 237 mile journey winds its way from east to west across the country but I am now wholly convinced that completing it in a two-car car class 158 is the way to go!

153335, LE 0011.0045 Norwich-Sheringham (0002S0016), Norwich station
Seats will be at a premium on the single-car 153335 that will soon leave Norwich with the 11.45 to Sheringham. This picture illustrates the problems that Greater Anglia has with regard to its shortage of stock. This single-car unit is probably all that was available to work this service despite the company once again drafting in loco. hauled stock to release units.

170201, LE 11.17 Great Yarmouth-Norwich (2P17), Norwich station
170201 arrives at Norwich station with the 11.17 from Great Yarmouth. This 2P17 service connects with the 12.00 to Liverpool Street giving passengers about ten minutes to change platforms and get on the London train.

Up station starter signal, Reedham station
Get your picture while you can! Scenes such as this at Reedham station are set to change over the next couple of years as the Victorian era signalling is wiped away. Looking east from the end of Reedham station sees it up starter RJ3 (Reedham Junction 3) at danger. The signal box that controls the signal is seen in the distance just in front of the bridge. Another relic from past times is over in the trees to the far right, the station yard's loading gauge is still standing.

Reedham swing bridge & signal box (GE, 1904)
After riding my Brompton bike through Reedham village I arrived at the lofty road bridge that offers superb views across the Fens and of the swing bridge. I was pleased to see that the bridge was in the swung opened position, not something I have seen before. The 1904 Great Eastern signal box, that controls the bridge, is likely to survive the re-signalling over the coming years as there is no suitable alternative plan to control and operate the bridge, it seems that once again the Victorians got things right the first time!

153309, LE 12.58 Norwich-Lowestoft (2J76), Holly Farm bridge, Reedham
With the previously open swing-bridge, behind where I am standing, now closed to river users, 153309 has the road and is seen with the 12.58 Norwich to Lowestoft. It is about to pass under Reedham's Holly Farm bridge and roll out over the bridge to continue its journey across the Fens. Notice that Reedham Junction's distant signal is also pulled off for a Norwich bound service.

153309, LE 12.58 Norwich-Lowestoft (2J76), Reedham swing bridge
153309 rattles across Reedham's swing-bridge working the 12.58 Norwich to Lowestoft. Notice the interesting approved walkway for the signalman to access the box. After accessing the line through a gate just at the side of the metal cage in the foreground, the signaller walks along the yellow/brown pathway set into the down line between the tracks. On reaching the box, the path turns right so that the steps can be accessed at the far end.

68024 & 68004, LE 12.57 Lowestoft-Norwich (2J77), Reedham swing-bridge
68024 'Centaur' rattles its way over Reedham's superb swing-bridge leading the 12.57 Lowestoft to Norwich. Just passing Reedham Swing Bridge signal box, at the rear of the train, is 68004 'Rapid'. In a short distance, the train will pass over Reedham Junction where the line is joined by the one from Great Yarmouth via Berney Arms.

156422, LE 0013.0048 Lowestoft-Norwich (0002J0079), Reedham station
156422 arrives at Reedham station with the 13.48 Lowestoft to Norwich. In this picture, there are four semaphores on view that are controlled by Reedham Junction signal box that is out of sight behind the train. Over the coming few years, this scene is set to change dramatically as the Victorian infrastructure, that still works perfectly safely and efficiently, will be wiped away as part of the Anglia re-signalling scheme. I travelled on this train back to Norwich to rejoin my wife and son.

90001, LE 0015.0030 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (0001P0049), Norwich station
90001 'Crown Point' still has its taillights illuminated while it sits at Norwich station's platform one. It has fifteen minutes before departure with the 15.30 to London Liverpool Street so the platform crew will continue their work replenishing the water tanks and clearing the coaches of rubbish. Notice my Brompton bike leaning against the second lamppost along the platform.

The nameplate of 90001 'Norwich Crown Point' looks smart on the side of the locomotive as it stands at the Norwich station that itself is just a very short distance from the depot after which it is named. The 90 will soon work the 15.30 to Liverpool Street.

68002, 37425 & 57303, stabled, Norwich yard
Taken from the open window of a London train waiting in platform one at Norwich station is a trio of DRS' finest! To the left is 68002 'Intrepid', then 37425 'Concrete Bob' and finally tucked away at the back is 57303 'Pride of Carlisle'. The locos. are all stabled waiting for work running the Greater Anglia services covering for their persistent DMU shortages. Every year the railway press state that this is the last season of these workings but, they keep being retained....for how long one wonders?

37425 'Concrete Bob' and 57303 'Pride of Carlisle' sit stabled adjacent to Norwich station. They have been used at various times to operate the loco. hauled services for Greater Anglia operated by DRS.

158866, EM 0009.0052 Liverpool Lime Street-Norwich (0001L0008), Norwich station
158866 eases into Norwich station arriving with the 09.52 from Liverpool Lime Street, a journey that has taken five and a half hours. I can think of better ways to spend this time rather than sitting in a class 158 unit! Having said that, these are not bad DMUs being relatively comfortable and, depending on where you sit, fairly quiet.

156412, LE 15.36 Norwich-Great Yarmouth (2P26) & 158866, EM 09.52 Liverpool Lime Street-Norwich (1L08), Norwich station
At Norwich, a passenger boards 156412 that will work the 15.36 to Great Yarmouth in about ten minutes time. Notice the branding on the side of the DMU encouraging one to 'Ride the Gainsborough Line' indicating that this unit will often work on the Marks Tey to Sudbury branch. Andy and I have vowed that this (and its neighbour, the shorter branch to Braintree) will be subject to a visit sooner than later. In the background, 158866 can be seen in its brighter East Midlands livery having arrived with the 09.52 from Liverpool Lime Street.

68024 & 68004, LE 0014.0057 Lowestoft-Norwich (0002J0081), Norwich station
68024 'Centaur' brings the 14.57 from Lowestoft into Norwich station. At the rear, 68004 'Rapid' will be used to pull the return train back out Great Yarmouth. I am sure that the commuters of Norfolk appreciate the roominess and comfort of Mk.IIf stock rather than a cramped unit.

66715, stabled, North Walsham condensate terminal
Not the finest quality of picture, but a rare one! 66715 'Valour' stands just outside of the North Walsham gas condensate terminal. Stabilised hydrocarbon condensate is piped to its North Walsham depot from the Bacton gas terminal. It is stored in large tanks until it is removed once a day by a tanker train to Harwich for reprocessing. This return working is the only regular freight flow on the Sheringham branch line, even then only going as far as here at North Walsham.

153335. LE 0015.0045 Norwich-Sheringham (0002S0024), Cromer station
Our train back from Norwich waits at Cromer station. Here the crew change ends for it make the final part of its journey along the north Norfolk coast to Sheringham. Single-car 153335 was distinctly over-crowded working this 15.45 Norwich to Sheringham service, particularly due to the large number of school pupils who used the train.

Tickets, Sheringham-Norwich-Sheringham
Our return tickets from Sheringham to Norwich cam in at just over £15. Not bad value but my wife and I used our two-together card and our son was under 16 so benefited from a half fare.
