18. Trip to Slough-27.02.19

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2019 > 18. Trip to Slough-27.02.19
Unfortunately, my elderly aunt was admitted to Wexham Park Hospital so I visited her. I travelled from Northampton by train to Euston. I then rode my Brompton across to Paddington and took the train to Slough where I was met by my cousin. I managed my first trip on an IET and have written some comments on this in the picture section. The return journey was a mirror image of the outward one but I travelled back to Paddington on a Turbostar.

350231, LN 08.33 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W06, 1L), Northampton station
The 08.33 Birmingham New Street to Euston service arrives into Northampton station formed of 350231 and another unit on the rear. The chap walk purposefully to the train had alighted from the previous up terminating train that was a little late and he thus missed his London train. He was moaning to anybody who was prepared to listen but he only had, in reality, a fifteen minute wait; perhaps he had an appointment or something?

67012, 67021 & 90019, stabled, Wembley Yard
Passing through Wembley Yard reveals three locomotives stabled. Still in its smart Wrexham and Shropshire silver livery is 67012 is adjoined to 67021 in its Belmond British Pullman brown and cream. Just putting in a appearance behind the 67s is 90019 'Multimodal'.

Interior, 800033
An interior picture of 800033 whilst it waits at Paddington to depart with the 11.20 to Worcester Foregate Street. This was my first trip on an IET and only for about fifteen minutes as far as Slough. However, here is my initial assessment.........

Positives - Rapid acceleration, very light and airy, plenty of legroom, a generally pleasant ambience.

Negatives - Surprisingly noisy, the ride was choppy, the seats were very hard and unforgiving, maybe too bright, the seating moquette was a bit drab and already showing some signs of wear in places.

An odd observation.....notice that there are printed seat reservations placed in the slots on top of the seatbacks, these as well as the computerised reservations on the displays on the luggage racks!

800033, GW 11.20 London Paddington-Worcester Foregate Street (1W28, 8L, cancelled from Worcester Shrub Hill), Slough station
800033 pauses at Slough station having arrived with the 11.20 Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street. I had just alighted from this train and this marked my first experience of travelling in an IET. This train did not quite make it to its destination being terminated at Shrub Hill. This was, according to RTT, due to a 'door fault'.

800309, GW 11.01 Oxford-London Paddington (1P24, 1E), Slough station
800309 arrives at Slough working the 11.01 Oxford to Paddington 'fast' service. Even though it was a fine and unseasonably warm day, the shadows are still long and proved troublesome shrouding a number of the trains that I photographed in deep shadows.

800312, GW 11.30 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C12, 4E), Slough station
Running at full line speed, 800312 passes through Slough station with the 11.30 Paddington to Bristol temple Meads. I had not noticed until today, but the recessed doors look as though they are not properly closed.

165124, GW 11.39 Windsor & Eton-Slough (2A19, RT), Slough station
165124 arrives at Slough's platform one with the 11.39 from Windsor and Eton. This unit was involved in a derailment in the throat of Paddington station on 18.06.16. It was extensively damaged but rebuilt as can be seen here.

66567 & 66519, 09.25 Southampton-Garston FLT (4M28), Slough station
This picture perfectly illustrates the problems created by the installation of the electrification paraphernalia when trying to take photographs. 66567 is seen emerging from under Slough's William Street bridge but, unfortunately, 66519, that is tucked in behind, is out of view. The 66s are leading the 09.25 Southampton to Garston FLT 4M98 Freightliner. This working is often double-headed and is one that I have photographed on the WCML near to my home at Roade.

66614, 11.13 Theale-Hope (6M91), Slough station
I was particularly pleased to see 66614 '1916 Poppy 2016' leading the 11.13 Theale to Hope cement empties as it was a photographic 'cop'! It is seen about to pass through Slough station in the ridiculously warm February sun that saw people in tee shirts and shorts! I know that it's a bit of a muddled picture but I like that way that the train has been framed by the gloom of the bridge and recently installed T519 colour light.

165104, GW 13.35 Bedwyn-London Paddington (1K21, 1L), Slough station
165104 speeds through Slough station with he 13.35 Bedwyn to Paddington. I have visited Slough station a number of times, but the amount of development that has been going on in its surroundings is simply staggering! The grand 1884 station is now completely dwarfed, particularly to the north side by hotel developments and the like.

800006, GW 14.21 London Paddington-Worcester Foregate Street (1W29, 6L), Slough station
Passing through Slough station at speed is 800006 working the 14.21 Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street. Not a bad image considering that it was taken in full shade on a very bright and sunny February day.

DR 98013, 11.54 Chelmsford-Swindon Transfer, Slough station
The 11.54 Chelmsford to Swindon Transfer engineer's train passes through Slough station. It is being led by DR 98013 'David Wood'. The train was composed of a number of assorted HOOB wagons. I was surprised at the speed this train was travelling that only allowed me to capture the shaded part of the station; I had no time to get to a sunny spot from when the announcement made that 'the train passing platform four is not scheduled to stop' and to 'stand clear' was made.

165128, GW 14.01 Oxford-London Paddington (1P30, RT), Slough station
My train back from Slough to Paddington arrives at Slough station. 165128 is working the 14.01 Oxford to Paddington 1P30 that ran non-stop from here to its destination. These Turbos are now coming up for thirty year's old and they still run well. The trip to Paddington was fast, smooth and quiet even though I was forced to stand in the vestibule.

59203, stabled, Acton yard
Now in its DB red livery, 59203 is virtually indeterminable from its younger class 66 cousins. It is seen here standing in the bright afternoon sun in Acton yard. Close examination revealed that it was coupled to a freight train and that it had crew in the cab. Therefore, it can be assumed that it was to work the 15.25 Acton to Merehead Quarry empties, that would leave about thirty minutes after this picture was taken.

66188, stabled, Acton yard
66188 has arrived in Acton yard with an up aggregates train of some sort. I have not been able to identify what it had worked.

Demolition, Old Oak Common depot
Demolition is well under way of the last section of Old Oak Common depot that closed in 2018 when HST maintenance was removed from the site. There will be a huge interchange station at about the point where this picture is taken that will link the GWML, Crossrail and HS2. HS2 will then dive back under West London at the point about where the left hand excavator is and emerge some miles away in West Ruislip.

Stored Crossrail class 345s, Old Oak Common
What a farce! Lines of brand new class 345 Crossrail units sit in their brand new depot at Old Oak Common with nowhere to go. When the inevitable time and £2billion over-run of the Crossrail project was announced nearly all the units were delivered from the builder. So, they have to sit patiently waiting the call whilst still being paid for and leased at huge expense to the taxpayer.

350129, LN 15.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1W19, 6L), London Euston station
My train back from London to Northampton sits at Euston's platform eighteen. 350129 worked the 15.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street that was unpleasantly overcrowded as it was just a single set working. At least it arrived into Northampton on-time so my wife was able to give me and Bertie the Brompton a ride home to Roade!

Tickets, Northampton-Slough-Northampton
By splitting my tickets manually and avoiding the cross-London TFL part of the journey I was able to get from Northampton to Slough and back for a reasonable £35.50; not bad as it was booked the night before travel. I saved a couple of Oyster fares by riding Bertie the Brompton across London from Euston to Paddington and back.
