A beautiful Sunday afternoon got me out into the village for a walk and get another 10 000+ pace count. I explored another section of the former S&J railway the route of which passes just on front of my house.

66137 is unfortunately in the shade as it passes through Roade with the 10.09 Dollands Moor to Daventry International Railfreight Terminal bottled water train. The picture is taken from Hyde Road bridge in the village.

390040 is about to exit the southern end of Roade Cutting under Hyde Road bridge with the 14.30 Birmingham New Street to Euston train. It won't be many weeks now until the afternoon sun is able to illuminate trains in the cutting.

Former SM&J bridge embankments, A508 Roade
With the busy A508 road below I am syanding on the trackbed of the former SM & J railway where it used to cross the road. The matching embankment can just be made out through the trees on the other side of the road. The bridge at this location was demolished over a weekend sometime in the late 1960s.

Former SM&J fencing, Roade SP754509
The boundary fencing of the former SM & J railway can still be seen complete with its wires in almost rampant tree and sapling growth. This section of the closed line is just south of the village or Roade near to where it used to cross the A508.

Former SM&J trackbed looking west, Roade SP755509
The former trackbed of the SM & J railway looking west just south of the village of Roade in Northamptonshire. Whilst this would normally be completely taken over by wildlife, there is a footpath along the trackbed that keeps the worst of it at bay!

Former SM&J gate & crossing, Roade SP755509
Apart from the new pieces of wooden fencing to the far left and the galvanised gate in the background all this is original SM and J infrastructure. The concrete post and wooden gate protected the line from animals and the like with the track running left to right between the two gates.

Former SM&J embankment, Roade SP756507
The trees are growing on the embankment that used to carry the double-track SM and J railway just south of Roade. Also in this image is one of Roade's two water towers and the palisade fencing that lines the WCML. The SM and J crossed the WCML just in front of the water tower on a rather spindly bridge referred to locally as the Tin Bridge. Also, there was a tightly curved spur from the WCML that joined the SM and J at a spot about level with the lone electricity pole to the left of the image.

Former SM&J bridge, Ashton Road, Roade
Despite there being no railway to cross since the late 1960s, the double arch bridge that carries the ashton to Roade road is still firmly intact. Indeed, Network Rail still have an obligation to maintain it and visit it regularly to monitor its condition as witnessed by the white patch on which they write details of their visits. This is the bridge that I see everyday from the front of my house when getting up and opening the curtains, doing the washing up or the gardening!

390115, VT 15.37 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H70, 1E), Pianoforte site, Roade
This is a spot that has been afforded by the demolition of Roade's old Pianoforte site and the building of the new housing estate on its land. Unfortunately, I am the wrong side for the afternoon sun but I am not sure if I am going to able to get access in the future? 390115 heads north with the 15.37 Euston to manchester Piccadilly. The empty space down below is where the once extensive sidings were located that linked the Pianoforte factory to the network. This was particularly important during the second world war when the factory was involved in the manufacturing of armaments.
