68004, SR 15.00 Motherwell TMD-Edinburgh Waverley ECS (5G13), Edinburgh Waverley station
To satisfy capacity needs ScotRail are still operating their Fife Circle locomotive-hauled services, something that they have done for some years. Now operated by the new class 68s rather than the 67s and 37s of the past, the 15.00 Motherwell to Edinburgh ECS arrives into Waverley's platform two. Hauled by 68004 'Rapid', the train has taken a circuitous route from the Glasgow depot using the Edinburgh freight only avoiding line that travels through the south of the city.

68004, SR 17.08 Edinburgh Waverley-Glenrothes with Thornton (2G13), Edinburgh Waverley station
A good number of the passengers on platform two at Waverley station appeared to be enthusiasts seeking to to enjoy the treat of some loco. hauled miles! 68004 'Rapid' has just arrived with the ECS from Motherwell and will work forward as the 17.08 to Glenrothes with Thornton.

A busy scene at the Western end of Waverley station sees three commuter workings that will leave soon. From left to right, 158741 will work the 17.05 to Dunblane, 170417, the 17.37 to Aberdeen and 170408, the 17.11 to Kirkcaldy.

91118, GR 11.30 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh Waverley (1S15), Edinburgh Waverley station
91118 has just arrived with the 11.30 from King's Cross at Waverley station. In the annals of time I am not quite sure what all the passengers, milling about on platform nineteen, are waiting for? It must be the following train as the 91 hauled service was terminating. Notice the imposing former North British Hotel in the background, regular readers will be aware of my spotting friend and companion Andy. This hotel holds a special place in his heart as he spent the first night of his honeymoon there no doubt hanging out of the window getting numbers rather than paying appropriate and considerate attention to his bride!

68004, SR 17.08 Edinburgh Waverley-Glenrothes-with-Thornton (2G13) & 91118, GR 17.00 Edinburgh-London King`s Cross (1E24), Edinburgh Waverley station
The evening 17.08 Edinburgh to Glenrothes-with-Thornton commuter service hauled by 68004 'Rapid' gets away from Waverley station. Next to it, 91118 is getting ready to propel the 17.00 to King's Cross away on its journey south. In theory, the 91 should have left ten minutes ago but obviously something has gone awry with a late departure not boding well for the journey to London.

68004 'Rapid' makes a hasty (dare I say a rapid!) departure from Edinburgh Waverley leading the ScotRail 2G21 17.08 Edinburgh to Glenrothes-with-Thornton commuter service. The train was busy but passengers would have been in a lot more comfort than being packed on an inadequate unit of some kind.

91118, GR 11.30 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S15) & 68007, SR 17.20 Edinburgh Waverley-Cardenden ( 2L69), Edinburgh Waverley station
The second evening commuter 'super train' arrives into Edinburgh Waverley hauled by 68007 'Valiant'. This 2L69 service is the 17.20 Waverley to Cardenden that goes via Dunfermline. Once it reaches its destination, it takes a leisurely return journey as ECS to Mossend. As it arrives at Waverley, 91118 has just arrived leading the 11.30 from London King's Cross.

158702, SR 16.21 Glenrothes-with-Thornton-Tweedbank (2T52), Edinburgh Waverley station
158702 arrives into Waverley's platform twenty with the 16.21 Glenrothes-with-Thornton to Tweedbank. Edinburgh. With passenger usage of twenty-four million and rising, Waverley is the UK's eighth busiest station it was certainly a pretty frenetic place to be at teatime on a Friday even though this scene does not look it!

68007 'Valiant' leaves Waverley station with former North British Hotel dominating the skyline. According to the clock on the hotel and the time marker on the camera, it left a little late with the 2L69 17.20 Cardenden evening commuter train.

43274, GR 14.52 Aberdeen-London King`s Cross (1E25), Edinburgh Waverley station
43274 'Spirit of Sunderland' emerges from Mound Tunnel as it enters Edinburgh Waverley station leading the 14.52 Aberdeen to King's Cross HST service. Travelling on an HST along the north east coast of Scotland and then down the ECML is a lovely way to enjoy a long and scenic railway journey. I hope that the new IETs, to be introduced in the next few years, are a worthy and appropriate replacement for these veterans of the rails.

43309, GR 14.52 Aberdeen-London King`s-Cross (1E25), Edinburgh Waverley station
43309 sits at the rear of the 14.52 Aberdeen to King's Cross service as it pauses at Edinburgh Waverley station. Looking at the crowded platforms, it is clear that passenger numbers, not only for this service, are buoyant. However, this has lead to severe over-crowding issues; something that is hopefully being addressed by new and higher capacity train sets being introduced.

Nameplate, 43274, GR 14.52 Aberdeen-London King`s Cross (1E25), Edinburgh Waverley station
Not only does HST power car 43274 carry this rather nice nameplate, but it also has some rather fancy and matching vinyl graphics adorning the sides. I think that the Virgin East Coast livery really suits these forty year old train sets keeping them looking fresh as they continue to operate on the front line carrying tens of thousands of passengers.
