Every now and then when the Northampton line is closed on a Sunday, diversions have to go via the Weedon loop. One of the more unusual ones is the 4L98 Daventry to Purfleet Freightliner. To get south, it first goes north to Rugby where the engine runs round. The train then makes a lightening dash round the Weedon loop to get back on to the up slow as soon as possible. This makes for an unusual picture of freight on the otherwise normally passenger train loop line, so I always make the effort to get out when possible.

390115, VT 08.38 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (1A05), Blisworth Road bridge
From the lofty height of the Blisworth Road bridge just south of Northampton, 390115 'Virgin Warrior' heads south with the 08.38 Liverpool Lime Street to Euston. The recent engineering works to stabilise the cutting wall to the left involved it being totally cleared of vegetation that opened up the view. However, it is growing back at quite a rate at the base so once again, this view will disappear soon.

390042, VT 09.20 Manchester Piccadilly-London-Euston (1A07), Blisworth Road bridge
390042 'City of Bangor/Dinas Bangor' heads south approaching Roade Cutting taken from Blisworth Roid bridge. I am in a bit of a precarious position here with my ladder leaning against the bridge parapet with the busy and narrow road directly behind me. I always take three road traffic cones with me to this location to offer me a little bit of protection and I wear a hi-viz top; I do get some strange looks from motorists but at least they see me, slow down and drive around my ladder!

66426, 10.05 Daventry-Purfleet, via Weedon (4L98), Blisworth Road bridge
The unusual sight of a freight on the Weedon loop line. 66426 rushes past with the 10.05 Daventry (DIRFT) to Purfleet 4L98 Freightliner. It was routed this way due to engineering works on the Northampton area that is some distance down the line in the middle distance. The Freightliner first went north from DIRFT to Rugby. The locomotive then ran round the train and it headed south to this point. To get out of the way of the Virgin and London Midland workings backing up behind it, control will put it on the slow line as soon as possible. The next point south from here where they can do this is Hanslope Junction, about five miles away.

350264 & 350256, LM 10.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (2Y10), Blisworth Road bridge
A diverted London Midland working approaches Roade Cutting from the north taken from the heights of Blisworth Road bridge. 350264 and 350256 from the 10.14 Birmingham New Street to London Euston. Notice how the sun has just caught the rear set of the train subtly avoiding illuminating the front set....c'est la vie!
