Yet another work trip to collect not one but two cars! This time my boss and I headed to Newcastle first to collect a rather nice Volvo C30. On the way back, we stopped off in Leeds to pick up a VW Golf.

350112, LM 06.35 Northampton-Crewe, Rugby station
Our trip to Newcastle started out early from Northampton. We took the 06.35 train to Crewe as far as Rugby. Having alighted at Rugby, this train is waiting for the RA. My boss and close friend Trevor Cooper is standing on the platform taking no interest in the Desiro; and, why should he?

350113, LM 06.58 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2T01), Birmingham New Street station
Our second train was the 06.58 Northampton to Birmingham New Street that we took from Rugby. Here, 350113 has just arrived into New Street with plenty of time for us to make our connection.

96374 (Nightstar generator coach), Doncaster yard
At Doncaster, one of the few remaining pieces of Nightstar stock that did not get sold to Canada is seen. Interestingly, 96374 is classified as a locomotive even though it was actually generator coach. It was designed to be used on the Nightstar services when they were hauled by class 37s as these locomotives did not have enough ETH capability. The 96s were converted Mk.III sleeper coaches of which a number were manufactured; a concept very similar to the ETHELs that were used when the Mk.III sleeper coaches were introduced in Scotland in the early 1980s.

466012 & 08724, stabled, Doncaster yard
It looks as though Doncaster's Wabtec works is busy as stock from three different operators is seen in this image. To the left is a Great Eastern coach with one of London Midland's to the right. In the foreground, part of South Eastern's refurbished unit 466012 is being shunted by 08724 and looks ready to return to its operator following refurbishment.

220006, XC 06.02 Guildford-Newcastle (1E79), Doncaster-Station
220006 pauses at Doncaster station whilst working the 1E79 06.02 Guildford to Newcastle. My boss and I had travelled from Birmingham New Street on this train and still had a fair chunk of the journey to go to Newcastle.

08724, stabled, Doncaster yard
One of Wabtec's resident shunters waits in the yard at its Doncaster complex. 08724 was built at Crewe in 1960 and started off its working life on the Scottish Region. It then moved to March and finally Stratford before being acquired by the Doncaster facility.

55002 & 09017, stabled, NRM yard
As our train passes the National Railway Museum at York, 55002 'The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' is on display at the rear of the min building. 09017 is just poking its nose into the shot on the right.

47798, stabled, NRM yard
Preserved and privately owned 47798 'Prince William' sits just north of the National Railway Museum in York. It has been repainted into its Royal Claret livery and is complete with royal embellishments.

185141, TP 12.06 Newcastle-Liverpool Lime Street, Newcastle station
TPE 185141 waits to leave Newcastle station with the 12.06 to Liverpool Lime Street. Whilst these units are fast and roomy my experience of travelling in them has been somewhat marred by high noise and vibration levels.

Class 994, TW 11.37 South Hylton-Newcastle Airport, crossing Metro bridge, Newcastle
Looking down the River Tyne reveals a number of its classic and familiar bridges. Crossing the Tyne Bridge is a Metro class 994 working the 11.37 South Hylton to Newcastle Airport service. I think this is a fascinating picture that reminds us of a time when our industrial heritage really did rule!

Tickets, Northampton-Newcastle
By splitting the tickets five ways, I once again saved a load of cash! Just under £45 each seems pretty good value equating to less than 0.2p/mile, not bad really!
