A Saturday morning run out from home to favourite spot of mine just south of Banbury. The purpose was to capture the oddly named Purbeck and Bomo Explorer. The main attraction of this railtour, that started at Derby and went to the Swanage Railway traversing its new mainline link, was that it was double-headed by 50007 and 50050.

221128, XC 05.11 Manchester Piccadilly-Bournmouth (1O04), Warkworth SP476394
221128 forms the 05.11 Manchester to Bournemouth CrossCountry service just South of Banbury. Whilst this spot appears to be a quiet country location looks can be deceiving. I am in-fact standing on the M40 motorway embankment with the traffic thundering past above and behind me. This location is nearly a mile walk along the Jurassic Way from the where the car has to be parked, and then under the motorway bridge and up the bank on the other side.

After a dull start to the day, the sun is just starting to burn through the mistiness just south of Banbury. 168267 and 168214 head north near Warkworth as the 07.00 Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill working. The elevated position here is provided by the embankment of the M40 motorway.

165130, GW 07.53 Oxford-Banbury (2L38), Warkworth SP476394
This is probably about as far north as First Great Western operate on the network. They operate a shuttle service between Oxford and Banbury stopping at all the intermediate stations. Here, 165130 is seen working the 07.53 Oxford to Banbury that will arrive at its destination, seen in the background, in a few minutes.

The 1E82 06.25 Bournemouth to Newcastle approaches Banbury near the village of Warkworth worked by 221139. On the skyline is the Grade 1 listed St. Mary's church in Banbury with its conspicuous tower complete with a well weathered verdigris cap.

50007 & 50050, outward leg of The Purbeck & Bomo Explorer, 04.48 Derby-Swanage (1Z50), Warkworth SP476394
Running as 1Z50, the outward leg of The Purbeck and Bono railtour left Derby at the unearthly time of 04.48! It's now 07.30 and the train has just left Banbury. It is about to pass under the M40 motorway, the embankment of which I am utilising to get a high vantage point. The 'tour is being led by two beautifully restored Type 4s, 50007 'Hercules' and 50050 'Fearless' that, unfortunately, had just been powered back as they approached me as the train was pathed behind a stopper that was only just in front of it at King's Sutton. So, whilst the picture is reasonable, the DAT recording was somewhat compromised being dominated by the traffic above me on the M40!

Class 220, XC 05.45 Sheffield-Reading (1V81), Warkworth SP476394
A class 220 four-car set heads south near the village of Warkworth forming the 1V81 05.45 Sheffield to Reading. The Voyager was forced to a walking pace at this location as it was only four minutes behind the class 50 hauled Purbeck and Bomo railtour that itself was caught behind a Chiltern stopper. Once the Marylebone service had cleared Aynho Junction the two faster services would be able to get a move on and catch up any missed time.
