158827, AW 09.10 Birmingham International-Holyhead (1D12), Birmingham New Street station
ATW's 158827 pauses at Birmingham New Street forming the 09.10 Birmingham International to Holyhead. An interesting journey from the dead centre of the country to the north west tip of Wales. Whilst a unit would not be my choice to make the journey in, a class 158 would be the best of the options available.

350253, LM 08.50 Wolverhampton-Walsall (2A11), Birmingham New Street station
350253 sits in the gloom of New Street station working the cross-Birmingham 2A11 08.50 Wolverhampton to Walsall service. Despite the much heralded work carried out rebuilding New Street, the platforms remain rather cramped and very uninviting. I suppose that there is only so much tat you can do with a station that is almost completely underground?

158828, AW 07.47 Wrexham General-Birmingham International (1G93), Birmingham New Street station
158828 has it nose just illuminated by the daylight inside Birmingham New Street station. It has just stopped working the ATW 07.47 Wrexham General to Birmingham International service. As the last passengers board, the guard's hands are thrust impatiently in his pockets with the train ready to go!

31452, stabled, Bristol Barton Hill Depot
31452 sits stabled outside Bristol Barton Hill depot. Two days earlier, this veteran class 31 had worked down from Carlisle Kingmoor towing ex. DRS 47828 to Exeter. It then returned light engine to Barton Hill. 31452 is seen in its Devon and Cornwall Railways green livery repainted from when it was in Fragonset's dramatic overall black livery and named 'Minotaur'. In its early BR days it was numbered 31279, a locomotive that I saw a number of times in the Bristol area.

A crew change takes place at Bristol Temple Meads' platform ten with 221124 having arrived forming CrossCountry's 1V47 08.07 Manchester to Paignton service. We had travelled down on this train from Birmingham New Street.

Site of Bristol Bath Road depot
A scene that has dramatically changed from when I cut my spotting teeth at Bristol Temple Meads in the 1970s. The flat land beyond the fence was the site of Bristol Bath Road depot, that was the home to in impressive allocation of motive power. There had been a depot at this location in various forms since the Bristol and Exeter Railway first opened one. There have been various plans for the waste land since demolition, but none have yet to come to fruition.

43070, GW 11.30 Bristol Temple Meads-London-Paddington (1A15), Bristol Temple Meads station
With derelict hulk of Bristol's former rail connected Royal Mail sorting office in the background, 43070 'The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers' waits to leave Temple Meads with the 11.30 to Paddington. 43170 was an Eastern Region power car that was initially part of set 254008.

Frontage, Bristol Temple Meads station
The classic frontage of Bristol Temple Meads station, a familiar sight to many a traveller since it was opened in the 1870s. The earlier station building, opened by the Great Western in 1840, is the structure to the left, now used as a car park! The later through platforms, and the ones that are in use today, is seen to the right of the image. Until World war II there was a spire atop the tower above the clock face.
