During the Christmas break of 1978, my grandparents paid for our whole family to go on holiday to Majorca. When we were there we took the narrow gauge train to the northern coastal resort of Sóller from Palma. A nice day out that enabled some interesting pictures. The line still runs today and is a major tourist attraction on the island.

No. 3, unidentified Palma-Sóller working, Carrer Concňrdia, northern streets of Palma
We travelled on the Ferrocarril de Sóller (Railway of Sóller) all the way from Palma to Sóller. This image is taken in the northern suburbs of Palma with the train passing along the Carrer de la Concňrdia. We are being hauled by one of the small electrics no. 3. Notice the track workers standing aside as we pass and could that be their van parked in the quiet street to the left?

Sóller tram depot
Having travelled the entire distance on the Ferrocarril de Sóller from Palma we arrived into Sóller station. This view shows the tram depot at Sóller where the trams for the Tranvía de Sóller are maintained and housed. Having arrived at Sóller station passengers can change to the tramway for the final 4.5km journey down to the harbour. We did not do this seeking to walk there and back.

No. 2, unidentified Palma-Sóller working, Sóller station
With the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana in the background, no. 2 arrives into Sóller station with a service from Palma. Next to the 3ft gauge train is tram no. 1 in the tram depot that is part of the Tranvía de Sóller. The Sóller railway was opened in 1912 (ironically on the same day that Titanic sunk!) in order to open up commerce, particularly the trade in citrus fruits, in the north of Majorca with the town of Sóller being somewhat isolated by the mountains.

No. 3, unidentified Port De Sóller-Sóller working, Porto De Sóller Harbour front
As we were walking from Sóller down to the harbour tram no. 3 heads back to Sóller along the harbour front. It looks well patronised on this particular day. Whilst it is popular with the tourists, the tramway is used by locals too. Examination of Google earth street view sees that the unusual wall to the right is still there along with the block of flats as seen in the image. Also, I cannot help but feel that the driver of the tram bears an uncanny resemblance to the James Bond 'baddie', Jaws!

No. 4, unidentified Sóller-Palma working, crossing Cinq cents viaduct
On our return journey from Sóller to Palma we were hauled by locomotive no. 4. Here, the train is crossing the Cinq cents viaduct high in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains.

No. 4, unidentified Sóller-Palma working, Palma station
Having arrived at Palma station on our return journey no. 4 rests as the passengers disembark, including my aunty in the green top turning for a final look at the locomotive. If you have an interest in railways, and find yourself in Majorca, a trip on the Ferrocarril de Sóller should be high on your list of things to do!
