Class 55, unidentified down working, Hougham SK894453
Pan-shots were incredibly difficult to take on my Exa camera due to the reversed pentaprism vertical viewed viewfinder. Consequentially, I took very few and those that I did were not a great success. Here is one that I have kept for the record that I did actually try! It shows a class 55 working a down train past Hougham between Grantham and Newark. The herd of cattle add to the scene.

55003, 08.20 Newcastle-London King's Cross (1A11), Hougham SK894453
55003 'Meld' leads the 08.20 Newcastle to King's Cross past Hougham that is situated a short distance north of Barkston Junction. This spot was close to where Graham and I camped 'wild' for the night in a field near enough to the ECML to be woken by the sleepers as they passed!

55009, unidentified up working, Hougham SK894453
55009 'Alycidon' speeds southwards past the village of Hougham in Lincolnshire with an unidentified up working. As can be seen, Alycidon has had its headcode panel covered over with a domino style panel. Many of the class had their panels completely plated over with two small marker lights installed. I am not sure which look I prefer, I suppose it has to the the former as it is more akin to the as-built four-character headcode panel.

55021 (or 014), unidentified down working, Newark Northgate station
I like this picture taken at Newark Northgate station; it's full of interest. It shows a Deltic working a down express at speed through the station. This particular locomotive is one of either 55021 'Argyll and Sutherland Highlander' or 55014 'The Duke of Wellington's Regiment'. Both were on down workings at this time (12.30 according to the station clock) and both had plated over headcode panels. I was nearly bowled by a class 47 leading an up working but I actually quite like the effect of the rake of coaches stretching out to the left. Notice how quiet the station is, close examination only reveals two customers on the platforms.

Newark Crossing signal box (GN, 1869)
By 1978, mechanical signalling had been banished from the entire length of the ECML. However, there was still one box that operated semaphores signals (but not for the ECML itself) at the flat crossing just north of Newark. Here, looking south west, the ECML crosses the Nottingham to Lincoln line from left to right with Newark Crossing box controlling movements. The box was a tiny Great Northern structure dating from 1869. In this picture, the southern link from the Lincoln line to the ECML has recently been removed having been reinstated taking a slightly different route to the one seen here some years later. The box continued to operate and control the crossing until it was removed in 1981.

55013, Doncaster-Finsbury Park ECS (0B02), North Muskham level crossing SK790596
An unusual working is captured about to cross one of the level crossings at North Muskham just north of Newark. 55013 'The Black Watch' speeds south with a Doncaster to Finsbury Park ECS move running as 0B02. Despite being mid-August, we did not have great weather for our three-day trip with a lot of cloud that spoilt the pictures somewhat.

55017, 09.00 Aberdeen-London Kings-Cross (1E11), Eaton Wood SK723773
55017 'The Durham Light Infantry' passes Eaton Wood just south of Retford with the 1E11 09.00 Aberdeen to King's Cross working. The sun has put in a rare appearance at this classic spot that I visited a number of times subsequent to this first one in August 1980.

40075, unidentified down working, Eaton Wood SK723773
Another shot spoiled by the weaknesses of the old Exa camera, namely a maximum shutter speed of 1/150th second. The smashing rake of Mk. I stock is sharp enough but 40057 is not. The unidentified down working is seen passing Eaton Wood just south of Retford on the ECML. Studying the first coach of the formation reveals a set of round stickers stuck to every window, could this be some kind of excursion? Various sites that I have looked at, including the amazing Six Bells Junction do not list this train.

55003, 15.00 London Kings Cross-Aberdeen (1S31), Eaton Wood SK723773
55003 'Meld' plunges down the 1:200 gradient on its approach to Retford about to pass Eaton Wood leading the 15.00 1S31 King's Cross to Aberdeen. The building level with the rear of the train is the old crossing keeper's house at Gamston level crossing. There was also a signal box at this remote location halfway along Causeway Lane until the box was abolished. I have no details when the box was closed but, I suspect that it was the early to mid 1970s?

55019, 10.40 Aberdeen-Kings Cross, The Aberdonian (1E14), Bawtry SK649949
The last picture for the day before we drove north of Doncaster to Haywood in order to set up camp for the night. Pausing at Bawtry, between Retford and Doncaster, we caught 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier' heading south with the 1E14 10.40 Aberdeen to King's Cross, the up 'Aberdonian'. This view is taken from the overbridge that carries the A638 road.
