By 1978, mechanical signalling had been banished from the entire length of the ECML. However, there was still one box that operated semaphores signals (but not for the ECML itself) at the flat crossing just north of Newark. Here, looking south west, the ECML crosses the Nottingham to Lincoln line from left to right with Newark Crossing box controlling movements. The box was a tiny Great Northern structure dating from 1869. In this picture, the southern link from the Lincoln line to the ECML has recently been removed having been reinstated taking a slightly different route to the one seen here some years later. The box continued to operate and control the crossing until it was removed in 1981.
