74. A Sunday walk-18.11.18

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2018 > 74. A Sunday walk-18.11.18
A glorious late November day coincided with the closure of the Weedon Loop with consequential diversions through Northampton and with a number of unusual freights scheduled to pass Roade with an hour or so of each other. I took a pleasant walk from home across the fields with my camera over my shoulder.

390136, VT 10.45 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S58, 1E), Victoria bridge
390136 'City of Coventry' forms the 10.45 Euston to Glasgow Central 1S85 past Victoria bridge just south of Roade in Northamptonshire. The more observant will notice that the Pendolino is on the down slow line. As the Weedon Loop was closed for engineering works, all trains were being diverted via Northampton.

390039, VT 10.50 London Euston-Wolverhampton (9G06, RT), Victoria bridge
390039 passes Victoria bridge just north of Hanslope Junction on the down slow line forming the 9G06 10.50 Euston to Wolverhampton. This was one of the last trains to take this diversionary route via Northampton as the Weedon Loop was about to be passed back after engineering works. In fact, the following down train that went via the normal Weedon route reached Rugby in front of this 9G06!

66055, 10.41 Hanslope Junction-Bescot Up Engineers Sidings, Victoria bridge
Following on from a number of sets of overnight engineering works there were a series of infrastructure trains on this Sunday morning. 66055 'Alain Thauvette' leads a train of partially full ballast wagons past Victoria bridge with the 10.41 Hanslope Junction to Bescot. The 66 is named after the French Canadian Alain Thauvette, who for a long time led Euro Cargo Rail (ECR), the French subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. He has since moved to work for SNCF.

390123, VT 10.01 Preston-London Euston (1A10, 1E), Victoria bridge
390123 'Virgin Glory' looks smart in the late autumn sun as it passes Victoria bridge on the up slow line working the 1A10 10.01 Preston to Euston. This train took the Northampton line rather than the more usual Weedon Loop due to engineering works closing that line.

390117, VT 10.20 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A11, RT), Victoria bridge
390117 'Blue Peter' forms the 10.20 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston past Victoria bridge near Roade. It is on the up slow line due to the Weedon Loop being closed for engineering works. This was the final up train to take the diversionary route as the Weedon Loop had just been handed back, the next up train appeared about five minutes after this picture was taken on the fast line. This is my first picture of 390117 since it was named a month earlier to mark 60 years of the children's TV programme of the same name.

DR 73806, 11.45 Bletchley CS-Rugby, Victoria bridge
I had been tracking this working on RTT and correctly assumed that it was track machine returning to base after overnight engineering works and I was correct! Here, DR 73806 'Karine' passes Victoria bridge as the 11.45 Bletchley Carriage Sidings to Rugby.

Class 350, LN 11.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (2Y16, 5L), Roade Hill
On my walk home I paused while walking up Roade Hill between Roade and Ashton to take this picture of an unidentified class 350 heading south forming the 11.14 Birmingham New Street to Euston. Once again, my efforts to take this particular view with the filed's resident alpacas in the foreground were thwarted as they have been moved to a winter compound that's out of view...next time!

390045, VT 12.05 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street (1F16, 6L), Roade Hill
Striking a bright look look as it passes the Northamptonshire countryside near to Roade, 390045 'Virgin Pride' works the 12.05 Euston to Liverpool Lime Street. This one-off branding certainly is different and looks smart.

66122 & 66100, 11.30 Willesden West London Junction-Bescot Up Engineers Sidings, Ashton Road bridge
I have taken very few pictures from this bridge for two reasons. Firstly, it's a very narrow bridge with no pathway and cars have to get pretty close. Secondly, the parapet is so high that as a person of challenged height, I have no chance of seeing over it without a ladder and that is not practical or safe because if the first point! However, my new Canon GX1 Mk.III camera has a superb flip-out screen meaning that I can raise the camera above my head with fully stretched arms, point it over the parapet and take pictures like this! 66122 leads the 11.30 Willesden West London Junction to Bescot ballast working. At the rear of the train is 66100 'Armistice 100 1918 - 2018' that received its plates only a week earlier to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1.

Commemorative plaque, Hyde Road bridge, Roade
This commemorative plaque was unveiled in October 2018 on Hyde Road bridge in the village of Roade directly above the famous cutting. As can be seen, it was unveiled to mark the 180th anniversary of the opening of the cutting through which the WCML travels 57 miles north of London.

66167 & 66170, 12.20 London Euston-Bescot Downside, Roade Cutting
By this time of day (early afternoon) on a late autumn afternoon, Roade Cutting is plunged into shadow. However, with modern camera equipment, this does not preclude the taking of half decent pictures. Here, 66167 leads with 66170 dead in tow on the rear with another engineer's train, the 12.20 Euston to Bescot Downside. This train is composed of half full MHA ballast/spoil 2-axle wagons.

66170 & 66167, 12.20 London Euston-Bescot Downside, Roade Cutting
Dead in tow, 66170 is dragged along at the back of the 12.20 Euston to Bescot Downside engineer's working being led by 66170. I had been tracking the progress of this working on RTT since it left London with its rake of partially loaded MHA wagons returning after overnight work in Euston station.

66425, 13.09 DIRFT-Purfleet (4L48), Roade Cutting
As dependable as ever, the 4L48 Sundays only 13.09 Daventry to Purfleet Freightliner crawls through Roade Cutting. This was a particularly long and well loaded train on this occasion and headed by a regular performer, DRS's 66425.
