As part of the french exchange visit arrangements, we visited London with our pen-palls. I was delighted that my French teacher organised us to go by train rather than by bus thus giving our french friends the chance to experience HST 125 travel going up in set 253013 and back in 253020.

24079, 24134, D1041, awaiting cutting, Swindon Works
Tree class 24s, the two front ones being identified as 24079 and 24134 await their fate with D1041 'Western Prince' outside Swindon Works. To the far right of the image, under the tarpaulin, I think lurks a crane, possibly one of Swindon's steam cranes? The A shop standing behind was the former boiler and wheel shop has now been demolished and is the site of many modern houses that line the appropriately named Penzance Drive.

Class 52s, class 24s and DMUs, awaiting cutting up, Swindon Works
Since my last visit to Swindon Works in 1977 the scrap-lines have been tidied up with the rows of doomed stock and locomotives having been brought together. The scrap-man will no doubt do his worst in far more efficient manner now. Notice in the background the dead elm tree lined fields on the skyline. This area has now been completely covered by Swindon's western expansion area that exploded in the early 1980s covering thousands of hectares of greenfield land.
