40066, up freight, Hexham station
Simon and I had a fair walk from our overnight accommodation at Hexham Youth Hostel that was actually situated in the village of Acomb! On arrival at the attractive Hexham station, we were rewarded with the sight of 40066 heading a freight along the Tyne Valley towards Carlisle. This was another beautiful day with clear blue skies and hot temperatures. 40066 was a Scottish Region class 40 for all of its life being withdrawn in April 1981 and cut up at Swindon six months later. Some thirty-six years later I stood at the same spot this time photographing a far more mundane subject matter but the scene has remained remarkably similar, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30018035678/x7-142071-nt-09-24-newcastle-carlisle

55019, 10.20 Newcastle-London King`s Cross (1A15) & 55002, unidentified up working, London Kings Cross station
Having arrived at King's Cross, I turned my Exa camera towards the buffer stops to capture two Deltics. To the left, the train that we came down from the northeast on, the 1A15 10.20 from Newcastle with 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier'. To the right, 55002 'The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' has arrived before our train with an unidentified up working. It is interesting to note that both these fine machines can still be enjoyed today as they are preserved. The former by the Deltic Preservation Society and the latter is part of the national collection owned by the National Railway Museum. By way of a comparison, I stood in a very similar spot nearly forty years later, whilst the location is obviously the same the motive power is somewhat different, see...... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29942016004/x13-82201-gr-09-56-london-king-s

40101, stabled, London King's Cross station
40101 basks in the early summer sunshine at London King's Cross station. It is sitting in the recently created stabling point on the eastern side of the station. Behind it the remains of York Road station is undergoing demolition. 40101 survived as far as 1982 then languishing on for another two years at Crewe before being broken up in November 1984.

31120 & 37124, up freight (caravans), Selby station
Simon and I took a short evening walk from the Youth Hostel at Selby, a safely moored up former grain barge, to the station. We observed a number of workings the first of which was this one headed by 31120 and 37124. It was carrying a number of flat wagons with caravans on them. The train could have originated from the Hull area with Sprite and Abbey 'vans being manufactured at Cottingham. I do not know if the plant was rail linked, it was right next to the line, or if the train was even from there? Any help appreciated to solve where this working may have originated from would be appreciated.

37025, up freight, Selby station
Split headcode 37025 heads south through Selby station with an unidentified freight working. Despite the subject being a little out of focus, I love the lighting in this image looking in the general direction of the setting sun. After 37 years in service, 37025 did not quite make it into the millennium being condemned in 1999.

55011, unidentified down working, Selby station
In the days before the Selby diversion was constructed the station was a busy bottleneck. 55011 'The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers' takes the centre road through Selby station with an unidentified down working. Whilst the station is still present it is a shadow of its former self with just two lines and a south facing bay platform in operation.

55012, 17.00 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E21), Selby station
55012 'Crepello' brings the 1E21 17.00 Edinburgh Waverley to King's Cross through Selby station with its coaches rattling over the swing bridge. Whilst it was a shame that Selby lost its through ECML trains with the opening of the diversionary route in 1983 it did improve timings quite dramatically as the route around Selby was severely speed restricted.
