55017, 08.20 Newcastle-London Kings Cross (1A02), Peterborough station
The 08.20 Newcastle to King's Cross working was rostered to be an HST. However, on this day there was obviously a problem as 55017 'The Durham Light Infantry' was substituted. Following our run down from Grantham, the Deltic arrives at Peterborough. If we had been able to access gen as happens today we could probably have waited for this train at Grantham an travelled in it rather than behind 47434.

31108, stabled, March Yard
Skinhead class 31 number 31108 stands stabled at March Yard basking in the early summer sun. Either the train has been recently employed on a special train or a member of staff has a sense of humour because the headcode shows a royal train working. Our visit to March Yard was an unofficial visit, but being a Sunday there were few members of staff about. We wandered about unchallenged for sometime copping most of what we saw!

DB966507, snowplough, stabled, March Yard
DB966507 sits at March Yard still painted in its green livery complete with the British Railways logo on the side. This converted shunter was one of three that were built as snow ploughs. All work was completed at Doncaster Works in 1973 so it never received its TOPS number.

37050 & 31326, stabled, March MPD
A quiet Sunday morning found Simon and I inside the MPD at March. There were no staff about so we simply wandered around taking down many numbers most of which were cops! Here in the shed 37050 sits next to 31326. The 37 was new from the Vulcan factory in August 1962 as D6750. After becoming 37050 under TOPS in 1974 it morphed into 37717 in 1985. It was withdrawn in 2004 but not scrapped until 2009. 31326 was new from Brush in 1962 as D5861 becoming 31326 in 1973. It lived on in this guise until withdrawal in 1991 giving 28 years of service.

31226, 31272 & 25270, stabled, March yard
A line up of locos. at March Depot on a fine Sunday afternoon. 31226, 31 272 and 25270 stand at the blocks awaiting their next turns of duty. Of these three locomotives, 25270 was in service for the shortest time only being active on the network for a mere 16 years eventually being cut-up at Swindon Works in June 1986 some months after the works closed earlier in the year.

55002, 1510 Edinburgh Waverley-London Kings Cross (1E13), South Parade bridge, Grantham
After our evening meal at the Youth Hostel in Grantham we went out again. Simon went to the station and I went up to South Parade bridge to the south of the town. Here, 55002 'The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' climbs away from Grantham as it begins the assault of Stoke Bank with the 1E13 15.10 Edinburgh to King's Cross. Behind the train is the parts and service department of Aveling Barford’s former factory that made all sorts of heavy plant equipment whilst the town of Grantham basks behind in the evening sunshine.

Class 55, 18.50 Leeds-London Kings Cross (1A18), Grantham SK920344
Unfortunately, an unidentified Deltic passes under Grantham's South Parade Bridge with the 18.50 leeds to King's Cross Sunday evening service. I am not proud and it's not clever, but I did climb the fence and negotiate the bank to take this picture from the cess. Technically not a brilliant picture as it is into the setting sun but as it's a Deltic, it's made the final cut!

55009, unidentified down working, Grantham SK920344
55009 'Alycidon' roars down Stoke Bank on its approach to Grantham with an unidentified down working. I am in the cess taking this low-angle picture and looking back now realise what a crazy thing to do it was putting myself in this position. However, attitudes were somewhat different then and I was a naïve teenager eager to get some action shots of Deltics.

40149, unidentified down working, South Parade bridge, Grantham
In the dying light of this lovely early summer evening, 40149 descends Stoke Bank from South Parade Bridge just outside Grantham. I have not been able to be identify this working but it's composed a lovely uniformed set of Mk. I stock. 40149 had a just over twenty years of life on the network ending its life at Swindon in June 1986.
