A lovely and bright autumn morning so I went out to see a curiously named excursion, the 'Blackpool Illuminations-Pride of the North!' It's name say is it all really, a train carrying customers to Blackpool to see the famous lights with a late evening return! I drove the short distance on the Northampton cut-off near the village of Milton Malsor and, because of the sun being in the wrong position, I opted for a side-on position. As I was waiting, I had the bonus of two DRS 37s heading south from Crewe.

37407 & 37605, 06.50 Crewe Gresty Bridge-Willesden Brent Sidings, Milton Malsor SP740557
I had been watching this mysterious working on my 'phone using Open Train Times not knowing what it was as there had been no internet postings. As it approached, out of view, I heard the familiar sound of an English Electric 12CSVT engine opening up. Within seconds, I realised that there was two locomotives so had to quickly adjust the focal length of the lens to accommodate them! I had opted for a fast shutter speed (1/2500 sec) rather than a pan shot. The image shows 37407 and 37605 running as the 06.50 Gresty Bridge to Wembley that was unexplainably terminated at Willesden Brent Sidings passing Milton Malsor just south of Northampton.

A pan shot of 350231 as it passes Milton Malsor south of Northampton with the 08.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street. Just in front of the train is a yellow milepost that shows 62 miles from London (if it could actually be read!)

90029, outward leg of The Blackpool Illuminations-Pride of the North! 09.00 London Euston-Blackpool North (1Z78), Milton Malsor SP740557
90029, resplendent in its red DB livery, leads the 'The Blackpool Illuminations-Pride of the North!' excursion that left Euston at a sensible 09.00. It was leading a uniform set of Mk.1 stock that looked lovely and gained the attention of a couple of nearby dog walkers. The excursion, running as 1Z78, is seen passing Milton Malsor at 62 miles from London on the Northampton Loop.

Dedicated royal locomotive 67005 'Queen's Messenger' brings up the rear of the 'The Blackpool Illuminations-Pride of the North!' excursion that left Euston at 09.00. It would return much later having given the passengers a chance to enjoy the world famous Blackpool Illuminations that only had one day to go before being switched off for the season. The train is seen passing Milton Malsor just south of Northampton.
