A short drive over to Wellingborough to see the steam hauled York Yuletide Express. I went to the Nene Valley to get it crossing the Fourteen Arches viaduct just south of the town. A beautiful crisp winter's morning mad the trip out worthwhile!

43060 & 43045, EM 08.15 London St.Pancras-Nottingham (1D12, 5L), Nene Valley SP913670 Just after sunrise on a cold and frosty December morning, 43060 and 43045 cross the Nene Valley just south of Wellingborough forming the 08.15 St. Pancras to Nottingham train. This is a lovely spot that I have used not often enough but also one that will be significantly compromised when the catenary arrives sometime during 2018. 66069, 07.07 Mountsorrel-Radlett (6C31), Nene Valley SP913670 The swans seen totally unruffled by the passage of the 07.07 Mountsorrel to Radlett stone train as it passes them with 66069 leading. This early morning 6C31 freight is about to cross the Fourteen Arches viaduct as it is known locally to the people of Wellingborough. 66069, 07.07 Mountsorrel-Radlett (6C31), Nene Valley SP913670 A wide angle shot that shows the beauty of the Nene Valley just to the south of Wellingborough off to its best. The lakes in the foreground are former gravel pits that have become a haven for much wildlife since they were abandoned some years ago. There are a network of paths around the lakes that are popular with ramblers, bird watchers and dog walkers alike. The 07.07 Mountsorrel to Radlett 6C31 stone train, led by 66069, makes its way along the up slow line as it commences its climb to Sharnbrook summit some three miles to the south viewed from the edge of one of the lakes. Class 222, EM 07.04 Lincoln-London St. Pancras (1B21, 2L), Nene Valley SP913670 By now my feet were very cold despite two pairs of socks! A class 222 Meridian heads away from me southwards working the 1B21 07.04 Lincoln to St. Pancras service. This lovely, but very cold, scene is close to the River Nene to the south of Wellingborough. The river passes through the larger of the fourteen arches that make up the viaduct. Notice the white Portacabins in the distance, these were associated with the works that Network Rail were undertaken preparing the viaduct for the arrival of the electrification and the reinstallation of the up relief line. 46100, outward leg of The York Yuletide Express, 06.55 Ealing Broadway-York (1Z44), Nene Valley SP913670 I must admit to being a little disappointed with this picture given the effort that I put in to getting it; at least I did not need to drive far from home otherwise I would have been somewhat more nonplussed! I really thought that ex. LMS 4-6-0 46100 'Royal Scot' would have produced a little more exhaust on such a cold morning given that it was not stopping at Wellingborough! It is seen passing over the Nene Valley just south of the town with the outward leg of The York Yuletide Express from Ealing Broadway to York running as 1Z44. I think that it was running under caution behind an East Midlands stopper so just a hint of exhaust is visible from its chimney. 46100, outward leg of The York Yuletide Express, 06.55 Ealing Broadway-York (1Z44), Nene Valley SP913670 Just a whisper of wind has spoilt the formation of a reflection of 46110 'Royal Scot' and its train in the former gravel pit lake down in the Nene Valley near Wellingborough. The 4-6-0 is hauling the outward leg of The York Yuletide Express from Ealing Broadway to York. So, not only was there an absence of condensing exhaust on show but no lovely reflection, some of the best made plans and all that!
