A Saturday morning trip out with Andy to see The Yorkshireman railtour hauled by 'Union of South Africa' on the MML. Nice to get some local steam, shame about the grey weather!

222003, EM 06.29 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C15, 3L), Radwell TL008569
Looking across the floodplain of the River Great Ouse near to the Bedfordshire village of Radwell, 222003 'Tornado' is seen working the 06.29 Sheffield to St. Pancras. It was avery grey and dismal day that was somewhat contrary to what the Met. Office had forecast!

222003, EM 06.29 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C15, 3L), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
A pan shot as 222003 'Tornado' crosses the River Great Ouse near Radwell in Bedfordshire. I like pan shots as they really focus the eye on some aspect of the subject that is not normally so obvious. For example, I think that the wheel sets of the class 222 look very small and out of proportion to the size of the train.

Class 222, EM 07.05 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B16, 1L), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
A class 222 crosses the River Great Ouse near Radwell between Bedford and Wellingborough on the MML. It os forming the 07.05 Nottingham to St. Pancras. It is such a shame that the Met. Office promised sun did not put in a appearance, it was throughly miserable and grey morning instead!

Class 222, EM 07.58 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F10, 2E), Radwell TL008569
An unidentified class 222 works the 07.58 St. Pancras to Sheffield past Radwell in Bedfordshire. It has just crossed the River Great use and is about to start its accent of Sharnbrook bank, five miles of steady climbing ranging from 1:200 to a considerable stretch of 1:100.

43048, EM 07.30 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B18, 1E), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
43048 'T.C.B. Miller MBE' leads the 07.30 Nottingham to St. Pancras has just descend from Sharnbrook summit and is now crossing Radwell viaduct. A pan shot really shows off the classic shape of these veteran power cars that were the vision of T.C.B. Miller in the 1960s. He was a career railway engineer who's working life started with the LNER under Sir Nigel Gresley.

43050, EM 07.30 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B18, 1E), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
43950 brings up the rear of the 1B18 07.30 Nottingham to London St. Pancras. The power car is seen crossing Radwell viaduct in Bedfordshire. I think that the East Midlands Trains livery is one of the most successful applied to the HSTs in the privatisation era.

60009, outward leg of The Yorkshireman, 06.31 London Victoria-York (1Z60), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
60009 'Union of South Africa' makes very sedate progress on the down slow over Radwell Viaduct in Bedfordshire. Unfortunately, it was running on caution and about to stop at Sharnbrook Junction some mile or so ahead so there was a complete absence of exhaust to add a bit more to this very grey scene. It was working the outward leg of The Yorkshireman railtour that started at Victoria and ended up at York.

60009, outward leg of The Yorkshireman, 06.31 London Victoria-York (1Z60), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
60009 'Union of South Africa' is almost at walking pace as it approaches Sharnbrook Junction against adverse signals. This is a shame and will make things more difficult for the crew as they will have to work hard to get it going up to the summit even though the gradients on the slow are not quite so steep. It is leading the outward leg of the 06.31 Victoria to York running as 1Z60.

57314, outward leg of The Yorkshireman, 06.31 London Victoria-York (1Z60), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
57314 brings up the rear of The Yorkshireman from Victoria to York as it passes radwell on the MML in Bedfordshire. The West Coast livery applied to this former Virgin Thunderbird is utterly dismal and does its best to blend in with the equally dismal and grey landscape on this awful early autumn day!
