A few hours on the ECML with Andy photographing everything before its starts changing next year. We went to the Sandy and St. Neots area travelling in my Combo van.

43206, GR 05.40 Sunderland-London Kings Cross (1Y08, 2E), Sandy TL176510
An HST at full chat on the ECML is something that we have all become familiar with over the last forty years. But, it's one that will be coming to end soon as things evolve again. 43206 leads the 05.40 Sunderland to King's Cross past Sandy's unusually named New Zealand footbridge.

91121, GR 08.06 London Kings Cross-Leeds (1D05, 2L), Sandy TL176510
91121 leads the 08.06 King's Cross to Leeds 1D05 service past New Zealand bridge just north of Sandy. These powerful 6 400hp electrics have done sterling service on the ECML since the early 1990s. It will be interesting to use if they will be utilised elsewhere on the network when they are replaced by the IETs from next year.

180109, HT 06.00 Beverley-London Kings Cross (1A91, 1L), Sandy TL176510
180109 forms the 06.00 Beverley to King's Cross past New Zealand bridge just north of Sandy. Whilst I'm not a particular fan of these units, as a west country lad, I appreciate their hydraulic transmission! They are coming up for twenty years old now and have had a somewhat chequered history, one wonders what the next twenty years hold for them?

365524 & 365541, GN 08.09 London Kings Cross-Peterborough (1P00, 1E), Sandy TL175510
Networkers 365524 and 365541 have just left Sandy station working the 08.09 King's Cross to Peterborough. These units have done excellent work on the GN lines but their time is coming to and end. By the start of 2018 it is likely that some will go off lease as new class 700s are introduced.

43314, GR 07.30 Lincoln-London Kings Cross (1B81, 4L), Sandy TL176510
The 07.30 Lincoln to London King's Cross HST is lead by power car 43314. It is seen passing the delightfully named New Zealand bridge just north of Sandy. 43314 was delivered as an Eastern Region power car in 1979 as part of set 254030 and there it has been since. In nearly forty years of use on the ECML I wonder if there are any figures as the distance it has travelled in its working life?

43241, GR 07.15 Leeds-London Kings Cross (1A09, 3L), Sandy TL176510
Of all the liveries that east coast train sets have carried, I think that the VTEC red and white is one of the best. Many people rated the GNER blue but as a photographer, it was often difficult to photograph rather like the GWR new green livery. Here, 43241 (ex. 43041, ex. 253020) leads the 07.15 1A09 Leeds to King's Cross past New Zealand bridge just north of Sandy.

91105, GR 08.30 London Kings Cross-Newcastle (1N08, 5L), Sandy TL175510
The curiously named New Zealand bridge, just north of sandy, is 45 miles north of King's Cross. The bridge is a modern structure dating from the time the line was electrified in the 1990s. It replaced a superb wrought iron GN structure that afforded superb views of the line. Taken from the new bridge, 91105 roars past with the 08.30 King's Cross to Newcastle.

DVT's are seldom photographed but they are a part of our railway as much as a locomotive is. They will soon go the way of all the older stock that is being superseded so I photograph them as much as everything else! 82206 leads the 06.30 Newcastle to King's Cross past New Zealand bridge just north of Sandy.

91127, GR 08.35 London Kings Cross-Leeds (1D06, RT), Sandy TL176510
For an electric locomotive, the class 91 makes a lot of noise. They really roar when they pass and I love their chime horns that sort of evoke the Gresleys that used to race up and down this line. 91127 shatters the peace at New Zealand bridge just north of Sandy with the 08.35 King's cross to Leeds.

82227, GR 06.55 Skipton-London Kings Cross (1A13, 1E), Tempsford Crossing
DVT 82227 leads the 06.55 Skipton to King's Cross past Tempsford between St. Neots and Sandy. This picture clearly illustrates the problems of photographing under the wires. The DVT has an electrification mast growing out of its roof! The aim is always to try and get the subject between masts, something that did not happen here.

91128, GR 09.00 London Kings Cross-Edinburgh (1S09, 9L), Tempsford Crossing
The 1S09 09.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh races past Tempsford level crossing with 91128 'InterCity 50' leading. The roof of the old Tempsford goods shed can be seen above the second Mk. IV coach. It is in use today as is the old station building. Tempsford station closed on 05.11.56.

82210, GR 06.00 Berwick-upon-Tweed-London Kings Cross (1Y14, 1L), Tempsford Crossing
The 06.00 Berwick-upon-Tweed to London King's Cross has less than 50 miles to go out its 335 mile journey as it passes Tempsford level crossing. It is being led by DVT 82210.

180107, GC 06.55 Bradford Interchange-London Kings Cross (1A59, 5E), Tempsford Crossing
Grand Central's 180107 works the 06.55 Bradford Interchange to London King's Cross past Tempsford level crossing. Whilst the livery that GC has created is different to everything else on the mainline, I am not sure that black is a great choice, even if with it bright orange flash?

91106, GR 09.03 London Kings Cross-Leeds (1D07, 6L), Tempsford Crossing
The 1D07 09.03 King's Cross to Leeds express passes Tempsford level crossing halfway between Sandy and St. Neots with 91106 leading.

Class 365, GN 08.34 London Kings Cross-Peterborough (2P06, RT), Tempsford Crossing
Tempsford level crossing barriers are down as an unidentified class 365 passes on the down slow with the 08.34 King's Cross to Peterborough. Unlike the next crossing south, Everton, this one is on a quiet road that leads to a couple of isolated farms and creates very few problems for road users. The queues at Everton can become significant, particularly at peak times.

43277, GR 09.08 London Kings Cross-Leeds (1N81, RT)
43277 leads the 09.08 King's Cross to Leeds past Tempsford level crossing. 43277 was originally numbered as 43077 and started its working life on this line in 1978 as part of set 254011. Thirty-nine years later, here it is thrashing up and down doing exactly what it was designed to do.

91122, GR 09.35 London Kings Cross-Leeds (1D08, RT), St

180109, HT 09.48 London Kings Cross-Hull (1H02, 10L), St
St. Neots station is undergoing some expansion and improvements. The most significant is the creation of a new entrance to the eastern side directly from a vast new housing development adjoining the station and line. 180109 speeds northwards working Hull Trains' 09.48 King's Cross to Hull.

82219, GR 08.45 Leeds-London King`s Cross (1A18, RT), St
DVT 82219 takes the curve at the northern end of St. Neots station leading the 08.45 Leeds to King's Cross. For high summer, it is a particularly grey and cool day that forced Andy and me to head for home soon after this picture was taken stopping for a warming Costa in St. Neots first!

66751 & 700117, 03.14 Dollands Moor-Hornsey EMUD (Via Peterborough) (6X70), St
66751 'Inspiration Delivered Hitachi Rail Europe' leads some freight boxes and then one of the new class 700s on a gauging train through St. Neots station. The working is an out and back from Dollands Moor to Hornsey via a reversal at Peterborough.

Brand new 700117 is hauled through St. Neots station as the 6X70 03.14 Dollands Moor to Hornsey gauging train. These class 700s are the new face of trains on this line and if all goes to plan they will be introduced at the start of next year.

43296 heads north through St. Neots station working the 1S11 10.00 King's Cross to Aberdeen. This 523-mile journey is one of the longest on the network and one ably carried out by these forty-year-old veterans but not for much longer.
