Whilst my wife and son spent our hard-earned money on Oxford Street frivolities I went to Paddington and then nipped along the Circle Line for a visit to King's Cross!

21332, District Line Wimbledon working, Notting Hill Gate station
One of the TfL stations where photos can be taken in daylight is Notting Hill Gate. Whilst waiting to get to Paddington (only two stops away) I photographed one of the newish S7 stock units 21332 as it arrives with a District Line working for Wimbledon.

With plenty of staff on-duty to greet passengers as they board the 14.00 to Penzance at London Paddington station. The rear power car as seen here is 43193. This was delivered during the summer of 1982 to the Eastern Region as part of three extra sets, this one as part of 254034.

Waiting to leave the famous platform one at Paddington is the 14.57 to Brustol Temple Meads. 43181 will be propelling the service from the rear. 43181 was a NE/SW power car that was part of set 253050 in December 1981.

Three units on the stops at Paddington operated by three different TOCs. Heathrow Connect's 360202 waits to leave with the 14.03 to Heathrow Terminal 5. Next to it is FGW's 43086 that will work the 4.30 to Weston-Super-Mare. Finally, at the back is Heathrow Express' 1T61 also going to Heathrow Terminal 5.

332009, HX London-Paddington-Heathrow T5 (1T61, 6L), London Paddington station
A passenger is helped aboard 332009 as it readies itself to work the 1T61 from Paddington to Heathrow Terminal 5. Whilst this may be a relatively quick service that gets into the heart of the airport, it is very expensive and I am sure that visitors who arrive into the UK cough a little when the ticket machines at Heathrow demands their money!

43140, GW 14.30 London Paddington-Swansea (1B46, 15L) & 43030, 14.57 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1U19, 10L), London Paddington station
Two HSTs wait to leave the capital for the West Country. To the left is 43140 'Landore Diesel Depot 1963 Celebrating 50 years 2013/Depo Diesel Glandwr 1963 Dathlu 50 Mlynedd 2013' leading the 14.30 to Swansea and to the right, 43030 on the 14.57 to Bristol Temple Meads. 43140 was part of a third batch delivered to the Western Region as part of set 253035 where as 43030 was an early 1976 power car delivered as part of set 253015.

The driver's control desk of HST power car 43030. It is standing at platform one of Paddington and will work the 14.57 to Bristol temple Meads, obviously when the driver arrives and takes his seat!

HST set, 14.57 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1U19, 10L), London Paddington station
A classic scene at the famous platform one at London Paddington. HST Mk.III stock sits waiting with it slam doors open for its passengers to board. This HST will work the 1U19 14.57 to Bristol Temple Meads, unfortunately, a service that arrived ten minutes late. This is scene that is set to change and disappear in the next year or so as the class 800 IETs are introduced and these iconic trains are withdrawn with an uncertain future ahead of them.

In its new drab green livery, 166210 waits to work the 14.50 to Oxford. These Turbostars are about to be cascaded to other parts of the network as the new class 387s are introduced. Next to the 166 is Heathrow Express' 332008 that will work the 14.55 to Heathrow Terminal 5.

43160, GW 14.27 London Paddington-Chippenham (Because of Bath Spa closure) (1C18, 8L), London Paddington station
A classic scene under the beautiful train shed at Paddington station! 43160 'Sir Moir Lockhead OBE' brings up the rear of the 14.27 to Chippenham. This train terminated at the Wiltshire town as Bath Spa was closed for extensive re-modelling over the Easter period. Passengers for Bath would then face the relatively short bus journey from Chippenham. Incidentally, the HST was named after the the former Scottish bus company manger who went on to form and lead First Group.

43181, 14.57 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1U19, 10L), London Paddington station
How many people who visit Paddington take a second to raise their heads and look up at the roof? The beautiful wrought iron work and timbering of the roof looks superb after extensive restoration by Network Rail. The station was opened in 1854 being designed for the GWR by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Matthew Digby Wyatt. 43181 sits underneath the grandiose curves ready to leave with the 14.57 to Bristol Temple Meads diverted via Bristol Parkway due to the closure of Bath Spa.

Class 70, ballast train for London Paddington, Royal Oak LU station
An unidentified class 70 makes it way at walking pace towards Paddington station. The ballast train went into one of the dark platforms on the north east side of the station ready for some engineering work that would take place over the bank holiday weekend. The picture is taken from Royal Oak LU station that I took the tube to.

The 4-car 13.07 Oxford to Paddington composed of 165129 and 165105 passes Royal Oak LU station as it enters the throat of Paddington station. It is passing Colas 70807 and some track-workers. The 70 was stabled on a possession line as there was extensive Easter bank holiday weekend work taking pace and the north eastern side of the station.

43206, GR 16.09 London Kings Cross-Newark (1B88, 3L), London KingsCross station
For some reason that I cannot recall I decided to try out my camera's B&W function? With a slightly different take on a well known scene, 43206 waits to leave with the 16.09 to Newark. 43206 was previously numbered 43006 that was part of an early Western Region set 253003.

43274 waits to lead the 16.00 King's Cross to Aberdeen whilst 43206 waits leading the 16.09 to Newark. 43274 was originally 43074 that was one of the Eastern Region sets 254010 delivered between 1978 and 1979. It has remained pounding up and down the ECML ever since!

Two Anglo Scottish HSTs meet at King's Cross station. The only difference is that one is just arriving having completed its 566 mile journey as the 1E13 07.55 from Inverness with 43318 at the front. The other, with 43274 leading, is about to embark on its 523 mile journey, the 1S24 16.00 to Aberdeen. These forty year old HSTs are still quite capable of handling such demanding diagrams day in, day out, but for how much longer?

A sea of Virgin East Coast at London King's Cross! From left to right.....91103, 16.30 to Edinburgh (1S25), 91118, 16.33 to Leeds (1D22), 43318, 07.55 from Inverness (1E13) and 43274 'Spirit of Sunderland', 16.00 to Aberdeen (1S24). I like the style of the Virgin East Coast branding, it's smart and stylish and brings some brightness to the drabness of London King's Cross station.

At King's Cross, the 16.09 to Newark, with HST power car 43206 leading, waits for the RA as a Grand Central class 180 enters Gasworks Tunnel working the 16.03 to Bradford Interchange. 43206 was an early Western Region power car that was part of 253003 where it carried the number 43006.

With two minutes to go before departure, the final few passengers will be taking their seats ready for the 16.09 to Newark to depart. This is a stopper service but would certainly be a relaxing and conformable way to reach the Nottinghamshire town.

91117, GR 16.15 London Kings Cross-Ferme Park ECS (5Y33), London Kings Cross station
Having recently arrived with a service from the north, 91117 'West Riding Limited' has a brief rest before a driver will join the train and work the 16.15 to Ferme Park, an ECS move for the train to be stabled and serviced. Just in the background to the left is the entrance to the tunnel that took the Metropolitan line extension down into the depths to Moorgate station. The platform, just by the tunnel entrance, was referred to as King's Cross York Road and was only served by northbound trains. Services ceased in 1977 but I recall 31s hauling rakes of suburban stock out of the tunnel and into the daylight at this spot in my early spotting days.

67003, stabled Thunderbird, London Kings Cross station
Stabled thunderbird (or rescue locomotive) 67003 sits just outside King's Cross ready for the next call! It is sitting just next to where the old King's Cross York Road platform and station was situated. The tunnel behind the 67 is where the King's Cross suburban lines went after they left King's Cross.
91118, GR 16.33 Kings Cross-Leeds (1D22, 20L) & 43315, GR 17.00 London Kings Cross-Edinburgh (1S26, 14L), London Kings Cross station
91118 waits at the head of the 16.33 to Leeds whilst 43315 heads the 17.00 HST service to Edinburgh. Would I prefer to travel in a Mk.IV behind a powerful electric locomotive or in the classic environment of a Mk.III HST coach? If I'm honest, I would not care as long as it was not a modern 'plastic' train where the seats don't line up with the windows and the seating is more akin to a cramped Easyjet flight!
