A day off work, a piece of 'juicy-gen' and a nice bit of weather all came together! It was reported that an ex Great Western HST set, that had come off-lease, was making its way to Ely for storage. It was too good an opportunity to miss an HST well off its usual tracks, so I went out in my trusty Combo van to deepest Rutland to observe this spectacle. Unfortunately, contrary to the Met. Office weather forecast, it clouded up as the afternoon progressed!

66605, 11.45 Chesterton Junction-York Yard South, Egleton SK869070
This had been a spot that I had passed a number of times but never stopped at. I looked at www.suncalc and realised that the sun would be right for the intended working. Unfortunately, for workings in the other direction, such as this one, it was not right! Never mind, a veil a high cloud had improved matters! 66605 passes Egleton near Oakham with the 11.45 Chesterton Junction to York Yard stone train. This picture is taken from a public footpath crossing.

Cross Country's 11.27 Stansted Airport to Birmingham New Street 1N50 working passes Egleton just south of Oakham worked by 170397. Whilst 170s have been successful workhorses, depending on where you sit in the train they are prone to noise and vibration. Some of the interiors are also looking a little worn now. This shot is a little head on and back-lit but it shows an English Summer scene nicely; very green but very overcast!

66094, 12.45 Peterborough-Mountsorrel Sidings, Egleton SK869070
Working light engine, 66094 passes Egleton between Oakham and Manton Junction as the 12.45 Peterborough to Mountsorrel. Just showing up in the background is Manton Junction's distant signal. A electric colour light operated by the 1913 Midland signal box.

With the sun very weak now behind the cloud that the Met. Office had not ordered, 170102 forms the Cross Country 12.22 Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport.. I deliberately wanted the train to be between Oakham's distant colour light (OM12R), operated from the signal box by the station and the dilapidated corrugated iron linesman's hut. Two antiquities that may not be around for much longer?

170103, XC 12.27 Stansted Airport-BNS (1N55, RT), Egleton SK869070
Cross Country 170103 passes Egleton between Manton Junction and Oakham working the 122.27 Stansted Airport to Birmingham New Street. This 1998 built Turbostar was originally used on the Midland Mainline, a wholly inadequate train for the job, before it left for Cross Country when the Meridians were introduced.

66707, 10.29 Felixstowe North-Birch Coppice (4M29), Egleton SK869070
66707 'Sir Sam Fay' hauls the extremely long 10.29 Felixstowe to Birch Coppice Freightliner. It is seen passing Egleton, near to Oakham, from a public Crossing. Sir Sam Fay (1856-1953) was a career railwayman who became the General manager of the Great Central Railway in 1902. This, in attempt to rescue it from a precarious financial position. He very nearly completed this task by introducing a number of initiatives many of which remain today such as season tickets.

170522, XC 13.22 BNS-Standsted Airport (1L42, 13L), Egleton SK869070
A two-car 170522 works the 1L52 13.22 Birmingham new Street to Stansted Airport. To its left can be seen distant colour light OM12R. This signal is controlled by the 1899 Midland signal box in Oakham some one and half miles away. Acting just as a semaphore, it shows caution if the home is at danger.

170522 XC 14.22 BNS-Standsted Airport (1L44, RT), Egleton SK869070
17522 passes Egleton about half-way between Oakham and Manton Junction working the 14.22 Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport. Note the roofless remains of the corrugated linesman's hut on the right as well as Oakham's distant signal on the other side of the train. Apologies for the power line pole growing from the roof of the train!

43128 & 43125, 14.41 Chaddesden-Ely Papwirth Sidings ECS for storage (5L46), Egleton SK869070
Now unbranded and with an uncertain future, an HST set makes its way through the Rutland countryside on its way for storage. The set is led by 43128 and is seen passing Egleton just south of Oakham. It was running as the 5L46 14.41 Chaddesden (Derby) to Papworth sidings (Ely). On arrival at Ely, the power cars were detached from the coaching stock and later returned to Brush at Loughborough in a back to back formation. Here they will undergo refurbishment in preparation for future use. 43128 was part of a later batch of HST delivered to the Western Region during 1981 and was, initially, part of set 253029.

43125 & 43128, 14.41 Chaddesden-Ely Papwirth Sidings ECS for storage (5L46), Egleton SK869070
43125 brings up the rear of a strange working marking the end of a 35 year old era. It is working the 5L46 14.41 Chaddesden-Ely Papwirth Sidings taking this set for storage. It has come off-lease the previous week and had been de-branded by staff at Laira. The whole combo is seen passing through the Rutland countryside at Egleton, in itself a strange location to see the passage of one of these iconic trains. 43125 was initially, part of Western Region set 253028 delivered in the summer of 1981 to strengthen services to the South West via the Berks and Hants route.
