As I was running late, I grabbed Bertie the Brompton bike and rode to a favourite spot just across the field from home to get another Cumbrian Mountain Express passing utilising its usual WCML path.

66415, 04.25 Felixstowe-Lawley Street (4M88), Ashton Road Bridge
66415 brings the 04.25 Felixstowe North to Lawley Street (Birmingham) Freightliner past Roade in Northamptonshire. This 4M88 is a regular Saturday morning working and can be fully loaded but not today; there were a lot of empty flat wagons.

Virgin Trains 390138 'City of London' forms the 07.20 London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly as it passes Roade in Northamptonshire. Something obviously went wrong further 'up north' as it arrived 41 minutes late into its destination.

390009, VT 07.30 London Euston-Glasgow (1S42, 35L), Ashton Road Bridge
In its new Virgin West Coast livery, 390009 'Treaty of Union' passes Roade on the southern West Coast mainline with the 07.30 London Euston to Glasgow Central. Originally named 'Virgin Queen', 390009 was re-named on December 2007.

390114, VT 07.23 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G05, 1L), Ashton Road Bridge
390114 'City of Manchester' forms the 07.23 London Euston to Birmingham New Street. These class 390 Pendolinos are now, amazingly, over 15 years' into their service on the WCML. Like most new trains, not liked when they were introduced but you have to admire the job that they have done so far.

86259, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express, 07.10 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86), Ashton Road Bridge
Despite the grey skies overhead, I like the lighting in this picture. 86259 'Peter Pan/Les Ross' is nicely framed by the 1950s catenary. It is heading the electric leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express from London Euston to Carlisle. Like all workings heading north on this morning there were long delays, this charter arrived into Carlisle some 50 minutes late for 35018 'British India Line' to then take the Settle and Carlisle route south again.
