Having completed my chores for the day I rewarded myself with an hour or so on the WCML at one of my favourite locations very close to my home, Victoria Bridge. This is situated between Roade and Ashton just south of Northampton.

66160, 15.06 DIRFT-Dollands Moor (6O67), Victoria Bridge
66160 heads the regular 15.05 Daventry (DIRFT) to Dollands Moor empty cargo wagons working. This is a long train that runs pretty much daily and one that has a particular sound quite different to all others. As the southbound is running empty, I presume the sound from the bogies must resonate inside the empty steel wagons to make this noise. The balancing northbound working runs full of imported water bottles and has a very different sound as a result. I am acutely aware of these sounds (and all others on their section of line) as I live in the white house in this picture that can be seen just above the front of the class 66 in the middle distance.

Class 221, VT 15.10 London Euston-Chester (1D89, 2E), Victoria Bridge
Getting the numbers of class 221s, and for that matter the 220s, is very difficult when they are on the move as in this image. The numbers are placed very low down and in a small font. This unidentified class 221 is forming the 15.10 London Euston to Chester working and is seen passing Victoria Bridge between Milton keynes and Rugby on the WCML.

70010, 11.13 Felixstowe N-Trafford Park (4M87), Victoria Bridge
As far as I am concerned, the jury is out on the looks of the class 70s. Their transatlantic styling is certainly different to other locomotives we have in the UK but they are not exactly attractive are they, maybe they are the 'brutalists' of the traction world? 70010 is seen leading a not very heavily loaded 11.13 from Felixstowe to Trafford Park Freightliner past Victoria Bridge on the WCML between Milton Keynes and Northampton.

12.32 Crewe BH-Felixstowe N (4L90) & 67005 & 67006, unidentified ex. Wolverton Works working, Victoria Bridge
As the 4L90 12.32 Crewe Basford Hall to Felixstowe Freightliner heads south dedicated Royal Train 67005 'Queen's Messenger' and 67006 'Royal Sovereign' head north past Victoria Bridge near Roade in Northamptonshire. The 67s were running light engine from Wolverton Works having deposited the Royal Train stock. As usual, this was an unadvertised working in the working train timetable but inside information goes a long way!
