7. The Cumbrian Mountain Express-17.02.18

I was waiting for a cold and frosty morning to revisit Haversham Viaduct on the WCML just north of Wolverton station. A trip out in my trusty Combo van, with its totally ineffective heater, found me at Haversham waiting for the Cumbrian Mountain Express railtour.

Class 390, VT 07.03 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G04), Haversham SP818425
Just after sunrise and an unidentified class 390 passes northbound over Haversham Viaduct with the 9G04 07.30 from London Euston to Birmingham New Street. The frozen ground in the foreground was as cold as it looked! By now, my feet were suffering as I had underestimated the temperature and only put one pair of socks on!

Class 390, VT 07.37 London Euston-Liverpool (1F11), Haversham SP818425
The 07.37 London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street crosses Haversham Viaduct in the early morning winter light. I was hoping that the horses that normally occupy the field in the foreground would have been there for added interest. Unfortunately, not today as I suspect that they were safely tucked away in some warm stables somewhere!

Class 350, LN 06.24 London Euston-Crewe (2U23) & class 221s, VT 05.38 Preston-London Euston (1A04), Haversham SP818425
London Northwestern meets Virgin on Haversham Viaduct. The 350 heads north with the 06.24 London Euston to Crewe whist the class 221s are into the last half hour of their early morning journey from Preston to Euston. I can't quite get my head round why an 8 coach diesel is utilised running all the way under the wires down the West Coast Mainline? I am sure that the timetablers at Virgin and Network Rail have their reasons but it does not seem to be the best use of available resources?

Class 350, LN 06.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y04), Haversham SP818425
With early morning sun glinting on the side of the class 350 and Haversham Viaduct you can almost feel the cold nip in the air! The 350 formed the 06.14 from Birmingham New Street to London Euston was slowing for its stop at Wolverton station about a third of a mile to the left of the picture.

86259, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express, 7.10 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86), Haversham SP818425
86259 'Peter Pan' or 'Les Ross' (you make up your mind!) crosses Haversham Viaduct near Wolverton with the outward leg of 'The Cumbrian Mountain Express' form London Euston to Carlisle. This regular winter working utilises this vintage electric power out and back with steam haulage, usually over the Settle and Carlisle, in between. A shame it was not in full sun but the light is good enough to create this nice picture. I was grateful to get back in the van and home for a warm breakfast!
