With a weekend of engineering works to the north of Northampton a full possession was in place with no trains running to and from Rugby, including freight. While some freight was diverted or did not run others were diverted on to the 'old' line via Weedon.

66705, 09.07 Ditton-Felixstowe South (4L05, 31E), Victoria bridge
Sweeping around the curve having just passed Roade on the up fast line 66705 'Golden Jubilee' leads the 4L05 09.07 Ditton to Felixstowe GBRf service. Having not seen the sun for what seemed like days now this was yet another grey and dull January day.

730018 & 730035, 14.18 Bletchley CS-Northampton EMD (5N99, 18E), site of Roade station
I am not sure as to why this 5N99 was taking place seeing 730018 and 730035 running from Bletchley to Northampton EMD at Kings Heath. It is seen passing Roade with a large X posted in the front window indicating a coupling fault on that end of the unit so could that be the reason for its short journey to the depot?

66754, 11.39 London Gateway-Hams Hall (4M47, 68L), site of Roade station
As the diverted 4M47 11.39 London Gateway to Hams Hall approached me at Roade travelling on the down fast line I was able to rapidly adjust the shutter speed down realising as it was travelling very slowly. 66754 'Northampton Saints' leads the train that was probably moving at about forty miles per hour after crossing from the slow to the fast at Hanslope Junction. However, it had now about twenty-six miles ahead of it to Rugby before any following trains would be able to pass.

390104, 14.30 London Euston-Preston (1S76, 24E), site of Roade station
What seems like a routine photograph of a Penedolino passing Roade is not all that it seems to be. 390104 'Alstom Pendolino' works the 14.30 Euston to Preston at not much more than a walking pace following hot on the heels of the previous slow-moving diverted freight. Right behind this Pendolino were a number of other down services all running on caution signal to signal much to the frustration of the drivers and their passengers. 390104 never made up its lost time between here and Rugby arriving at Preston twenty-eight minutes late.
