With the stormy weather delaying our customary New Year's Day trip to the Northamptonshire and Lamport Railway we did enjoy a slightly later trip behind a steam train. In addition, it was our first run to Boughton on their extension south which was opened earlier in 2024.

4, 14.00 Pitsford & Brampton return, Pitsford & Brampton station
On a grim New Year's Day ‘Swanscombe No.4’ or 3718 to give it its proper number waits at Pitsford and Brampton station. Soon it will work the 14.00 return departure that my wife and I would travel on enjoying a seasonal mince pie and drink. Despite the awful weather it was good to see so many people out visiting our local heritage railway helping to keep things going through 2025.

Boughton signal box (Ex Betley Road, LNWR, 1875) & station from 14.00 Pitsford & Brampton return
Taken from the train and my run on the Northampton and Lamport's southern extension to Boughton station their re-built signal box is seen. Whilst the base is new the top is from the former Bentley Road box near Norton Bridge. It is a Type 3 box that was originally opened in 1875 when the line south from Crewe was quadrupled. The NLR has certainly done a smashing job restoring it with it controlling all the signalling and point work at their southern extension.

Tickets, Pitsford & Brampton station
Our tickets and refreshments were issued for our trip on the Northampton and Lamport Railway. We travelled aboard the 14.00 return service behind Hawthorn Lesley No. 4. Despite the awful New Year's Day weather it was pleasing to find the train surprisingly full helping to swell the coffers for the railway on their final day of operation until March.
