I had seen reports on the internet forums that a Greater Anglia unit was returning from Wolverton Works to Norwich. I kept an eye on Open Train Times and sure enough, it popped up with plenty of time before its scheduled departure time. With my bike at the ready, I popped out to Roade cutting to capture it.

66541, 05.03 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L97), Roade cutting
Taken from the lofty heights of a little used occupation bridge above Roade cutting the 4L97 05.03 Trafford Park to Felixstowe Freightliner passes with 66541 slogging away at the front. It is emerging from a section of the slow lines protected by a sturdy framework known locally as the 'birdcage'. This was installed to protect this section of the cutting that has been susceptible to movement and even collapse.

As a Virgin Pendolino approaches on the fast line 350105 heads south on the slow working the 09.14 Birmingham New Street to Euston service. It is passing on some recently re-ballasted track at the very north end of Roade's famous cutting.

As a track machine heads south through Roade cutting, 350124 heads north working the 09.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street train. The occupation bridge that I am standing on is not a spot that I visit very often.

Class 221, VT 09.50 Birmingham New Street-London Euston, Roade cutting
The 09.50 Birmingham New Street to London Euston Virgin service has just entered Roade cutting worked by an unidentified Class 221 Voyager. The five-car unit is somewhat dwarfed by the vast and deep cutting that was and still is a magnificent Victorian civil engineering triumph!

156418, 10.33 Wolverton Centre Sidings-Norwich Crown Point (5Z56), Roade Cutting
It is uncommon to see a Greater Anglia unit on the WCML. 156418 has just left Wolverton Works (some eight miles south of this spot) after receiving attention and is returning to East Anglian metals as the 10.33 Wolverton Centre Sidings to Norwich Crown Point. The two-car unit is seen passing through Roade cutting in a view made a lot easier thanks to the recent clearance by Network Rail of the embankment above the retaining wall on this side at least!
