In the week before going back to work an unusual Wednesday charter passing close to home caught my eye. Passing Roade at just before 11.00 The Canterbury Tales Explorer had left Dumfries at an unearthly hour arriving at canterbury at lunchtime. This would give passengers a few hours to explore the delightful town before heading home in the late afternoon.

350121, unidentified up working, between Roade & Ashton
Under some clear blue skies and in warm late summer sunshine 350121 works an unidentified up London Midland service between Roade and Ashton in Northamptonshire. Unfortunately, I have not got my calculations quite right with the sun haveing just round too far at my chosen spot.

Shattering the peace and quiet of the Northamptonshire countryside near Roade with its five Cummins QSK19-R engines at full chat an unidentified Virgin West Coast service heads south. 221110 is one of a fleet of twenty-one units operated by Virgin on various routes along the WCML.

390009, unidentified up working, between Roade & Ashton
An extremely wide-angled shot that has needed a fair amount of work in Photoshop to straighten things up to eliminate distortion. 390009 heads south between the villages of Roade and Ashton working an unidentified up Virgin West Coast service. Notice that the wheat fields in the background have recently been harvested an activity that for me induces a feeling of melancholy that the summer is coming to an end.

47826, outward leg of The Canterbury Tales Explore, Dumfries-Dover (1Z82), between Roade & Ashton
Unfortunately, the sun has just round too far to illuminate the flanks of 47826 as it roars through the Northamptonshire countryside just south of Roade. The rather dull-liveried West Coast Class 47 is leading the outward leg of The Canterbury Tales Explorer that left Dumfries at some unearthly hour. Passengers would have a pleasant afternoon exploring Kent before heading home. Unfortunately, they would arrive back even later than planned due to the failure of 47316 (on the rear in this photograph) leading the returning train at Bletchley with 47826 running round to lead for the rest of the journey.
