Yet another very dull and grey December day found me out for a short time between decorating! I popped out on Bertie the Brompton to capture the passage of the 5Z72 returning steam-hauled empty stock from Southall to Crewe that was seen outward on Monday but then in bright sunshine!

The timing of the steam-hauled 5Q72 ECS move coincided with the weekly Colas network testing train. 43277 'Safety Task Force' leads the 1Q29 11.59 Crewe Pottery Sidings to Derby RTC via the rest of the Midlands train just south of Roade. It appears that the sound of the former East Coast HST power car has spooked the resident alpacas who normally are never bothered by any of the frequent trains that pass their field!

43257 brings up the rear of the 11.59 Crewe Pottery Sidings to Derby RTC NMT train that takes a convoluted route around most of the Midlands to reach here just south of Roade on the WCML. 43257 is an interesting power car being one of the pair that made up ECML pioneer set 254001 that entered service in 1977. Now wearing its Colas livery it will, on another day, be hauling a test train on the very tracks that it first operated on nearly fifty years ago.

221105, VT 13.02 London Euston-Chester (1D87, 1L), between Roade & Ashton
If plans come to fruition, it is now less than two weeks before Avanti will retire their Voaygers from operations on the WCML with the takeover of the Class 805 and 807s complete. However, this journey has been a long and tortuous one and I will not be holding my breath when the timetable changes on 15.12.24! 221105 passes between the villages of Roade and Ashton working the 1D87 13.02 Euston to Chester service.

NB As it transpired, this was my final photograph of a Voyager working for AWC on the WCML. With all the Class 805s and 807s in service by the start of the new timetable (as mentioned above) the final 221s were handed back to Beacon Rail - note added 19.12.24

66433 'Carlisle Power Signal Box 50th Anniversary 1973-2023' toils past the fields between Roade and Ashton leading the 10.02 Tilbury to Daventry (DIRFT) Tesco Express service. It does not appear to have even been noticed by the resident alpacas in the field unlike when the HST test train passed a little earlier that sent them scattering!

46100, 11.20 Southall LSL-Crewe LSL (5Z72, 8E), between Roade & Ashton
46110 'Royal Scot' makes for a fine site as it works hard on the down slow line between the Northamptonshire villages of Roade and Ashton despite he incredibly dull afternoon! It is leading the returning empty stock 5Z72 from Southall's LSL base to their parent base at Crewe located at the site of the former diesel depot after being used the previous day on a private LSL staff charter.

With the exhaust from 46100 'Rayel Acot' still lingering, 57002 is seen at the rear of its train giving the 4-6-0 a helpful shove. The train is the 11.20 Southall LSL to Crewe LSL empty stock move running as 5Z72 and is seen passing the fields just south of Roade in Northamptonshire. With the train passed I nipped back on my bike to get home and continue with my decorating. By the time I had reached Ashton Road bridge some whiffs of exhaust from Royal Scot were hanging about as the cloudy conditions had induced completely still conditions.
