During my work commitments in Sheringham, I built in a number of strategic breaks! I timed these breaks to coincide with NNR service trains arriving and departing from the Poppy Line's attractive station.

7564, awaiting removal, Sheringham station yard
7564 was built at Stratford Works in 1912. It remained an East Anglian locomotive throughout its life, largely operating in Norfolk and Suffolk, until withdrawal came in September 1962 ironically from Stratford where it was born fifty years earlier. It was one of the first locomotives to be bought by the M&GN Society to be used for hauling trains on the North Norfolk Railway. This it has done ever since along with many forrays to other heritage lines being particularly in demand during the 2012 season last year to mark its centenary. Alas, it was withdrawn from operational use two months ago as its boiler certificate has expired once again so it now awaits developments; more of this later!

Beyer Peacock & Co Ltd built 8572 with it entering use with the GER in 1928 classified as a B12. After withdrawal in 1961, it languished in several locations even being briefly returned to steam to haul a charter in 1963. Eventually, it was overhauled, a process that took until 1995 to become infamous as one of the most complex in railway preservation history, and was to be plagued with pitfalls and twists of fate. The B12 stands at Sheringham station waiting to depart with the first service train of the day, the 09.45 to Holt.

Old greets new at Sheringham! In the background GA's 08.21 Norwich to Sheringham (BR) service is just approaching the tiny station worked by 156417. Meanwhile, the 09.45 NNR service to Holt is about to leave formed of their superbly restored quad art set. At the rear of the train is an LNER 4-Wheel Pigeon Van 6843 dating from 1928 now used for the conveyance of bikes, buggies and the like rather than cooing pigeons!

Proudly wearing its Bittern Line logo on the connecting door 156417 stands at Sheringham station waiting to work the 09.46 service to Norwich. Whilst the friends of Sheringham station keep it looking nice with a superb display of flowers, emptied waste bins and useful information the station is really too small and inadequate for the ever-increasing number of passengers who use it. Notice the new Tesco store taking shape in the background, something that has caused much controversy in this small and rather parochial North Norfolk town!

Resident GER/LNER B12 8572 gets the 09.45 Sheringham to Holt train away from Sheringham station formed of the superb Quad Art set of stock. As can be seen, it is yet another grey and dull day on the North Norfolk Coast.

Standard Class 4MT 76084 has only entered traffic in the last few days after an extensive rebuild that has taken many years to complete. It is seen here leaving Sheringham station with the 10.30 service to Holt.

Standard 4MT only had a working life of ten years being built at Horwich Works. It spent its entire working life in the North West ending up at Barry. It went through two further owners after being rescued in 1974 but had no work undertaken after being painted entirely in red oxide paint. Eventually, work commenced in 1997 by the 76084 Locomotive Company Limited at its base in Morpeth. It is seen here departing from Sheringham with the 10.30 service toHolt.

5619, 12.00 Sheringham-Holt, Sheringham station
Working on the wrong side of the country! The Collett-designed GWR 5600 Class were always associated with South Wales seeing almost exclusive use on coal trains so to see one in Norfolk is a little incongruous! 5619 has been a long-term guest locomotive on the North Norfolk Railway since the start of the 2010 season. Attracting a lot of attention on the platform end, 5619 will soon depart from Sheringham with the 12.00 service to Holt.

Running tender first into Sheringham station Class 4 2-6-0 76084 arrives with the 12.00 service from Holt. It is passing a fine latticed signal post that supports the up starter and a shunting disc signal. Notice the white diamond attached to the shunting signal and the post. As part of Rule 55 this indicates to the train crew that they do not need to contact the signaller as no telephone is provided for that purpose. Instead, the signaller will know of the train's presence because track circuits are in operation.

7564, awaiting transportation to Ian Riley & Sons of Bury, Sheringham station car park
When I saw GER Y14 7564 sitting on the short spur at the far end of Sheringham's station car park earlier in the morning I thought it odd. I was right as later in the day it was loaded aboard a low loader ready for removal from the North Norfolk Railway. With its boiler certificate extension having expired it is time, once again, for the 1912 locomotive to be overhauled! It was heading off to Ian Riley and Sons facility at Bury for the work to be undertaken. I hope to see it back in Norfolk soon!

The cab of 7564 is seen minus its tender (loaded on another low-loader) ready to leave North Norfolk for overhaul. It will make the two-hundred-mile journey to Bury where Ian Riley and Sons will undertake the specialist work of dismantling and rebuilding the locomotive from the ground up. By the next morning, the two low-loaders had left Sheringham so I presume that they made the most of quiet roads by travelling through the night.

Tender of 7564, awaiting transportation to Ian Riley & Sons of Bury, Sheringham station car park
The tender of GER Y14 0-6-0 7564 looks a little lonely detached from its parent locomotive as it sits on a low loader in Sheringham's station car park. Both the locomotive and tender are heading for the northwest, leaving later in the evening for an overnight journey, to Ian Riley & Sons facility at Bury on the ELR. Here they will be stipped and overhauled with the plan being that it returns to service in two years - let's hope so!

D6732, 17.30 Holt-Sheringham, Sheringham station
The final service train of the day arrives at Sheringham station, the 17.30 ex Holt. It is led by the superbly overhauled D6732 that entered service last month (June 2013). It wears an authentic 'as built' livery that is as near as possible to how it would have looked when it was delivered new to Hull Dairycoates shed on 09.03.62. pre-dating me by almost two years!

The crew walk back to the rear of D6732 (formally 37032) to un-couple it from the stock of the 17.30 Holt to Sheringham service that has just terminated at its destination. This photograph, taken from the foot crossing, reveals the superb restoration of the locomotive (with it entering service last month) and the station. The scene recreates many locations throughout East Anglia from the 1960s; very well done to all involved.

Having been un-hooked from its stock, D6732 (formally 37032) eases back along the adjacent platform at Sheringham in order to head back to Weybourne for overnight servicing. The stock it brought in from Holt will stay at the station and be used on tomorrow morning's first train of the day.

With various matters attended to the crew apply the power to D6732 and take it away from Sheringham light engine to Weybourne. Apart from it now being a light engine the headcode has been correctly set to a Class 2, 'ordinary passenger, branch passenger ' service with an M route identifier that would have probably have been a Norwich service...local advice, please?
