On a super summer morning, Andy and I popped over to the Midland to see a steam-hauled Yorkshireman charter. In addition, a chartered HST also passed unusually using the slow line.

222005, EM 07.30 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D09), Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
The 07.30 St. Pancras to Nottingham service passes near the Bedfordshire village of Bromham worked by 222005. Whilst a sunny day is a blessing when it's in July it can create problems with extreme contrast and deep shadows a little of which can be seen here.

222017 passes Bromham working EMTs' 07.02 Nottingham to St. Pancras service. With work now underway to electrify the line this scene will change dramatically in the next few years. However, if the progress of the GWML is anything to go by it will be a number of years before the wires are strung!

The use of scratch-set HST for a charter should have been relatively easy for EMT to organise with it being a Saturday morning. Unusually running on the down slow line, 43050 leads the Mallard 75 125 Special past Bromham in Bedfordshire. The charter left St. Pancras at 07.38 heading for York where visitors would enjoy a visit to the NRM with special events around A4 4468 'Mallard' celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of its speed record.

As the Mallard 75-125 HST charter passes Bromham on the down slow line 222018 leads another Meridian working the 07.55 St. Pancras to Sheffield service. Normally I would have cursed a rogue train partially obscuring my chosen subject manner but on this occasion, the blocking train is of interest as it's an HST on the slow line.

Some allotment holders can be seen busy at work on their plots in the warm July sunshine in this wide-angled view at Bromham in Bedfordshire. Meanwhile, 222014 passes heading north working the 07.55 St. Pancras to Sheffield service.

43082, EM 07.18 Derby-London St. Pancras (1C17), Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
Whilst I would have cursed the introduction of the HSTs on the MML back in the 1980s they are now embedded in its operations north of St. Pancras as far as Sheffield, Leeds and York. They are now very much in their final years of operation with the forthcoming electrification now underway so I always try and capture one in operation when I can. 43082 'The Railway Children' leads the 1C17 07.18 derby to St. Pancras service past Bromham.

222023, EM 08.00 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M11), Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
The 1M11 08.00 St. Pancras to Corby EMT passes Bromham north of Bedford worked by 222023.As part of the stop/start electrification of the MML the up and down slow lines, to the left in this image, will be extended all the way to Glendon Junction north of Kettering. At present the two lines become one bi-directional line a few miles north of this spot at Sharnbrook. Junction creating a severe bottleneck on the route

222008, EM 08.15 Corby-London St. Pancras (1P19), Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
In glorious summer sunshine, 222008 passes Bromham at line speed working the 08.15 Corby to St. Pancras service. Despite being designated a Class 1 express service it seems a little incongruous that Class 222 Meridans operate what are, essentially, local stopper services. I suspect that the lack of appropriate stock drives this and begs the question as to what stock will be used when (if ever!) the electrification is completed.

43058, EM 08.15 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D12), Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
43058 leads the 08.15 St. Pancras to Nottingham HST service. I did not capture the number of the trailing power car as the train passes Bromham between Bedford and Sharbrook Junction on the MML. This is the last few miles of quadruple track on this primary route before the slow lines become just one bidirectional line north from Sharnbrook.

66536, York Yard South-Cricklewood, Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
66536 trundles along the up slow line at Bromham near Bedford leading a short rake of freshly overhauled Freightliner flats. I am not sure of the reporting number (unless anybody can advise) but it left York Yard the previous evening and was heading for Cricklewood Yard where the flats would be checked over and pressed straight back into service carrying boxes around the network.

70013, outward leg of The Yorkshireman, 06.30 London Victoria-York (1Z82), Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
With it being a warm summer's morning it was unlikely that there would be many signs of an exhaust from 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' and, indeed, this is the case as it passes Bromahm between Bedford and Sharnbrook! In fact, it seems to have steam to spare that is probably a good thing as it prepares for the climb of Sharbrook Bank. Despite wearing a Palatine headboard the title of the charter was titled The Yorkshireman that left Victoria at 06.30 and was heading for York as part of the Mallard 75 celebrations.

47245, outward leg of The Yorkshireman, 06.30 London Victoria-York (1Z82), Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
Ambling along the down slow line a Bromham near Bedford 47245 brings up the rear of The Yorkshireman charter running as 1Z82 that had left Victoria at 06.30 with a destination of York. 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' is at the front leading the train that is waiting a for a green signal to pass on to the fast line at Sharnbrook Junction.

222021, EM 08.25 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F13), Lower Farm Road, Bromham TL028518
EMTs' 08.25 St. Pancras to Sheffield service passes Bromham taken from Lower Farm Road worked by Meridian 222021. Once this service had cleared northwards towards Wellingborough the steam charter, seen in the previous two photographs, would gain a green light and crossover on to the fast line at Sharnbrook Junction and continue its journey to York.
