I popped out in the evening to see the returning Cheshireman charter but things were a little different to what was planned and I'm glad that I did not go to see it on the planned route near Northampton as I had intended!

350246, unidentified up service, Roade Hill
Rather side-lit but in lovely soft evening sunshine 350246 heads south near the village of Roade with an unidentified up service. On a Saturday evening, it ought to have been easy to identify this working but an emergency timetable was operating due to the closure of the Northampton line at Long Buckby. This meant all locals were starting from and terminating at Northampton with any through services taking the Weedon route that made for an interesting next train......

60009, on the up fast return leg of The Cheshireman, 17.07 Chester-London Euston (1Z73), Roade Hill
This isn't a site that I have ever seen before and one that I will not see again I suspect! The late-running Cheshireman charter that left at 17.07 from Chester heading back to Euston hauled by 60009 'Union of South Africa' was forced to take the 'old route' via Weedon rather than through Northampton. The diversion was due to the emergency closure of the Northampton loop at Long Buckby. Now much closer to its intended time it races past on the up fast line just south of Roade catching some lovely evening light. A number of Pendolinos were stacked up behind the charter but it was certainly going at some speed as it passed me so I doubt that they were much delayed. I wonder if the driver had route knowledge of the 'old line' or if a pilot joined the footplate at Rugby?

33029, on the up fast return leg of The Cheshireman, 17.07 Chester-London Euston (1Z73), Roade Hill
WCR's 33029 'Glen Loy' brings up the rear of The Cheshireman charter between Roade and Ashton with 60009 'Union of South Africa' leading at the front (see previoys photograph). Notice that the 1Z73 17.07 Chester to Euston is running on the up fast line rather than the customary slow. It was diverted on to this line at Hilmorton Junction to take the Weedon route due to an emergency closure of the slow lines at Long Buckby due to a failure.
