73. An afternoon walk-15.08.24

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2024 > 73. An afternoon walk-15.08.24

With the sun out, a day off work and a number of freights it would be rude not to take an appropriately timed afternoon walk! Incidentally, except for the photograph of the Class 805, all locomotives captured this particular afternoon are named!

805003, 12.07 Preston-London Euston (3A92, 37L), site of Roade station
Making yet another empty stock run prior to it entering service, Evero 805003 passes Roade as the 3A92 12.07 Preston to Euston. I am surprised at the relatively slow rate at which the Everos are entering service with Voyagers still seen (and heard!) passing Roade throughout the day.

 Namer 1 - 66710 'Phil Packer'

GBRf's 66710 'Phil Packer' passes the site of Roade's former station leading the afternoon's 4M22 10.25 Felixstowe South to Trafford Park service.

37608, 12.28 Derby RTC-Wembley Yard (0H72, RT), site of Roade station
 Namer 2 - 37608 'Andromeda'

Resplendent in its new Rail Operations Group livery veteran 37608 'Andromeda' passes through Roade. It was travelling as the 0H72 12.28 Derby RTC to Wembley Yard no doubt in preparations for some stock move or other. 37608 is considerably older than me dating from 1961, at sixty-three years old it still maintains its good looks; it's a shame that I do not!

66795, 14.40 DIRFT-Dollands Moor (6O55, 4L), Hyde Road bridge
 Namer 3 - 66795 'Bescot LDC'

GBRf's 6695 'Bescot LDC' looks very smart in contrast to the drab and work-stained Cargo Wagons it is hauling. The daily (seven days per week) 14.40 DIRFT to Dollands Moor empty wagons pass through Roade cutting. This is conveying the empty wagons back to the continent via the Tunnel for them to be filled with bottled water and return to the UK again for onward distribution from Daventry.

 Namer 4 - 66764 'Major John Poyntz - Engineer & Railwayman'

Not one of my most commonly photographed Class 66s passes northwards through Roade cutting leading the daily (Mon-Sat) 4M47 12.18 London gateway to Hams Hall. 66764 'Major John Poyntz - Engineer & Railwayman' was named at the Long Marston Rail Live event in June 2021 in memory of the late former inspector who died at the age of eighty-two in 2020.

66142, 11.59 Burton-ot-Wetmore-Acton TC (6V06, 9L), Roade cutting
 Namer 5 - 66142 'Maritime Intermodal Three'

As the work to complete HS2 grinds relentlessly on more and more waste is heading north from various worksites for disposal at several carefully selected locations. One of the empties heads south after depositing its load in the Trent Valley lead by 66142 'Maritime Intermodal Three'. The 6V06 11.59 Burton-ot-Wetmore to acton TC is seen passing through Roade cutting on what is now a warm and sunny weekday afternoon.
