A superb Sunday evening found me out in my home village of Roade to witness a veteran DMU passing. It's sobering to think that this unit is now forty years old and still going strong but, for how much longer?

390046, VT 16.55 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A57, 1E), site of Roade station The 1A57 16.55 Manchester to Euston Avanti service passes through Roade worked by 390046. After some really disappointing weather, this was the first day of what was to become some welcome nice and hot summer days. 390134, 17.34 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street (1F32, 21L), site of Roade station In some really warm and welcome evening sunshine 390134 passes Roade working the 17.34 Euston to Liverpool Avanti service. Regular viewers of my site will recognise one of Roade's two water towers in the background. However, close examination reveals that work is taking place to turn it into a private residence with huge chunks of the concrete now removed presumably for the addition of enormous tall windows. In addition, a section of the roof has been removed where a panoramic glass section looks like it will be installed. 805013, VT 18.01 London Euston-Holyhead (1D92, 13L), site of Roade station The new face (and sound) of the West Coast Mainline in the form of an Evero passes Roade on a superb Sunday evening. 805013 is seen working the 18.01 Euston to Holyhead service. I suspect that the regular passengers will have welcomed the move to the new trains compared with the tired and worn-out Voyagers; good luck to CrossCountry who have taken some of them on! 150137, 15.36 Newton Heath-Bletchley TMD (5Z51, 19E), site of Roade station Since the reintroduction of the Class 150s on the Marston Vale line between Bletchley and Bedford the units have been 'borrowed' from Northern. Whilst they have been re-branded they still appear to be having to go to and from Newton Heath for weekly servicing and exams. In past years this work was undertaken by Soho and there are still paths for this so perhaps this example is just a unit swap. Either way, it's a poor state of affairs when a railway cannot provide and maintain some units for a local service close to where it works. 150137 is seen passing Roade as the 5Z51 15.36 Newton Heath to Bletchley TMD.
