Whenever I am working in Milton Keynes I always have a scan down RTT to see what is passing as I am conveniently located to nip out for a few minutes. Today I spotted an intriguing LSL move that I was keen to see. Later in the day after my blood doning session I took my 'recovery time' at the nearby Roade cutting and was rewarded with some interesting workings within a few minutes.

37409, 08.37 Crewe HS-Southall LSL (5Z44, 14E), Loughton Redway bridge
Looking superb in its ScotRail reproduction livery 37409 'Loch Awe' passes through Milton Keynes at a crawling pace leading just one lone coach heading for Southall from LSL's Crewe depot as 5Z44. The coach is a former HST buffet car that has been superbly overhauled looking at the smart exterior paintwork.

66504, 10.59 New Bilton-Willesden Eurotunnel (4R98, 12E), Loughton Redway bridge
The running of the 4R98 empties and the 6R93 loaded balancing working are now a daily (weekdays) scene on the southern section of the WCML. The northbound carries spoil from HS2 operations from West London whilst the southbound, seen here led by 66504, brings the empties back from New Bilton quarry near Rugby. The train is seen here passing through Roade cutting.

221101 & 221106, VT 14.48 Holyhead-London Euston (1A62, 2L), Roade cutting
A poor picture (quality-wise) of a pair of Voyagers passing through Roade cutting but every one that I take today could well be the last on this route as the rollout of the Class 805s continues apace. 221101 and 221106 pass through Roade cutting working the 14.48 Holyhead to Euston service.

730213, 15.00 Crewe-London Euston (2Q94, 2E), Roade cutting
At last, the Class 730/2 sub-class are appearing undergoing testing and mileage accumulation runs on the southern West Coast route. 730213 passes through Roade cutting as the 2Q94 15.00 Crewe to Euston. When they enter service on this section of line they will replace the 350/2s that are going off lease and no before time as many of them are feeling very tired!

66588, 13.13 Felixstowe North-Lawley Street (4M93, 14E), Roade cutting
The 13.13 Felixstowe North to Lawey Street passes through Roade cutting led by Freightliner's 66588. I have a number of photographs of this locomotives the furthest from home in Northamptonshire was in the north east, see... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25690215204/x66588-10-27-leeds-flt-tees-dock

66116, 13.22 Trafford Park-London Gateway (4L56, 7E), Roade cutting
At a crawling pace, 66116 leads the 13.22 Trafford Park to London Gateway service through Roade cutting. The EWS liveried and branded Class 66 was smoking badly (even though it's not visible in this photograph) indicating that, along with its slow speed, something was probably amiss. Interestingly, five years ago when I photographed this locomotive I commented on it still carrying the Three Beasties branding, here it is still the same, see... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/28045587004/x66116-10-28-banbury-reservoir-tarmac

44871, 11.20 Carnforth Steamtown-Southall WCR (5V42, 42E), Roade cutting
Stanier Class 5 44871 leads a support coach through Roade cutting just catching a little of the late afternoon sunshine. The movement of steam locomotives for railtour duty is quite common with Carnforth and Crewe LSL being the home to many that operate in the south. In the case of the 5V42 11.20 Carnforth Steamtown to Southall WCR the locomotive will be leading the coming Saturday's West Somerset Steam Express from Paddington to Bishops Lydeard.

37409, 16.20 Southall LSL-Crewe HS (0Z44, 15L), site of Roade station
Having seen 37409 'Loch Awe' earlier in the day leading a former HST buffet car to Southall, the light engine is seen returning north pas the site of Roade's former station. Running as 0Z44 the 16.20 Southall LSL to Crewe HS arrived some fifteen minutes adrift despite passing Roade a little early.
