Up and out at a ridiculously early hour to see the passage of the charter stock for The Settle and Carlisle Steam Special which was starting from Coventry. The early morning light during the summer months has a very special quality but is tricky to get right in terms of exposure and temeprature.

350264, LN 04.48 Northampton-London Euston (2N02, 2E), Milton Malsor SP740557 Just a few minutes before the sun was to appear above the horizon to the east 350264 and a fellow Desiro work the 04.48 Northampton to Euston past Milton Malsor. Despite it being just a couple of weeks before the longest day it was a very cold morning with temperatures deep into single figures. 66084, 01.22 Dollands Moor-Ditton Foundry (6M13, 3E), Milton Malsor SP740557 With the early morning sun just illuminating the flanks of 66084 it is seen passing Milton Malsor a short distance south of Northampton. The Class 66 is leading the 6M13 01.22 Dollands Moor to Ditton freight which is not one that I have many photographs of due to its anti-social timings through Northamptonshire! 57303 & 57315, 03.09 Southall WCR-Coventry (3Z60, 1L), Milton Malsor SP740557 The purpose of my ridiculously early trip from home was to capture the passage of the 03.09 Southall to Coventry empty coaching stock move. Running as 3Z60 the smart Northern Belle-operated train is seen passing Milton Malsor just catching the early morning sun with 57303 'Pride of Carlisle' leading and just visible on the rear is 57315. On arrival at Coventry, the train would then work forward as The Settle and Carlisle Steam Special being steam hauled from Carnforth by 34067 'Tangmere'. 57315, 03.09 Southall WCR-Coventry (3Z60, 1L), Milton Malsor SP740557 With the rising sun warming my back and creating my shadow in the foreground 57315 is seen at the rear of the 03.09 Southall to Coventry empty stock working. On arrival at Coventry, the train would continue north as The Settle and Carlisle Steam Special. Class 350s, LN 04.52 Northampton EMD-Milton Keynes Central (5Y32, RT), Milton Malsor SP740557 The quality of light is very special just after sunrise as seen here near the Northamptonshire village of Milton Malsor. A pair of London Northwestern Desiros pass southwards as the 04.52 Northampton EMUD (King's Heath) to Milton Keynes empty stock working. This train almost prevented me from capturing the previous northbound working seen in the previous image passing seconds after the charter stock had gone out of view. 66566, 02.08 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L92, 22E), Milton Malsor SP740557 Sollouted against a dramatic sky illuminated by the early morning rising sun creates an interesting backdrop at Milton Malsor just south of Northampton. 66566 emerges from a short cutting leading the 02.08 Trafford Park to Felixstowe Freightliner. The 4L92 is not a fright that I have many images of due to its very early morning timings here in Northamptonshire. 66566, 01.09 Ditton-Felixstowe North (4L41, 5L), Milton Malsor SP740557 Just a few minutes after the previous southbound Freightliner had passed 66566 appeared at Milton Malsor leading the 4L41 01.09 Ditton to Felixstowe service. In the short time between the trains, the sun had gone behind a bank of cloud that totally changed the lighting characteristics.
