I would not normally have gone out after work on such a wet and dull evening but the passage of some steam enticed me! Expecting it to be a locomotive and support coach I was even more pleased that it was composed of a complete rake of stock; the effort paid off!

66555, 12.57 London Gateway-Garston (4M56, 19E), Hyde Road bridge In the dullness of a damp early evening 66555 plods through Roade leading the 4M56 12.57 London Gateway to Graston Freightliner. 221110 & 221105, VT 14.48 Holyhead-London Euston (1A62, 2E) & 12.57 London Gateway-Garston (4M56, 19E), Hyde Road bridge As the 4M56 Freightliner passes through Roade cutting 221110 and 221105 head south working Avanti's 14.48 Holyhead to Euston service. This photograph was taken the week the first Class 805s entered revenue service with a number of Class 221 diagrams going over to the new units. After twenty-two years of working the West Coast route time is finally being called on this noisy, cramped and pretty unpleasant units! Notice the wipers of 221110 in mid sweep indicating that it was now raining. 35018, 11.26 Carnforth Steamtown-Southall WCR ECS (5Z42, 16E), Hyde Road bridge A Merchant Navy on the West Coast Mainline is not an everyday sight! 35018 'British India Line' is seen passing through Roade cutting working hard and with a good exhaust exacerbated by the cool and damp conditions. The Merchant Navy is leading the 11.26 Steamtown (Carnforth) to Southall empty stock move in preparations for a further move to Swanage for a special Southern event. 66590, 13.13 Felixstowe North-Lawley Street (4M93, 24L), Hyde Road bridge Just as the tail of the steam-hauled 5Z42 passes under the A508 road bridge in Roade 66590 enters the cutting leading the 13.13 Felixstowe to Lawley Street 4M93 Freightliner almost spoiling the party. By now it was raining pretty heavily and with no protection I was pleased to get on my bike and get home for a welcome cup of tea and dinner but there was one more train to wait for! 805008 & 805003, VT 17.02 London Euston-Holyhead (1D91, 54L), Hyde Road bridge With the new summer timetable having come into operation two days previously the much-awaited Class 805s have begun revenue-earning service meaning that the Class 221s can be moved on to another operator. Looking smart and fresh 805008 and 805003 work the late running 1D91 17.02 Euston to Chester service through Roade. Unfortunately, everything was working late on this day including this service following a complete OLE power supply failure at Euston during the morning.
