After an extremely cold start to April, the weather has finally started to warm up a little. This improvement in the weather coincided with the Football League Trophy Final also known as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. With Crewe Alexandra playing Southend United a footex was chartered to take Railwaymen supporters to Wembley.

The 08.05 Manchester to Euston Virgin service passes through a sunny Roade cutting worked by an unidentified Pendolino. This Class 390 is one of the original nine-car sets that have been in operation for ten years now; where has that time gone?

Carrying Railwaymen supporters for their big day out at Wembley, DRS' 47828 leads the 08.46 Crewe to Wembley Central footex charter running as 1Z81 through Roade cutting. Playing in the Football League Trophy Final (also known as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy) they were to beat Southend 2-0.

47501 'Craftsman' brings up the rear of 08.46 Crewe to Wembley footex charter as it passes through Roade cutting as 1Z81. After beating Southend United 2-0 in the Johnstone's Paint Football League Trophy Final Crewe Alexandra supporters would return happy later in the day and I was planning to pop out again and photograph the train; unfortunately, things did not go quite to plan!

221114 & Class 221, VT 17.08 London Euston-Holyhead, Milton crossing
To capture the afternoon's return Footex from Wembley to Crewe I opted to go to the classic location at Milton Crossing just north of Roade cutting at a point just after the point where the Northampton loop line diverges from the fast lines. A pair of Voyager Class 221s, with 221114 leading, pass working the 17.08 Euston to Holyhead service. Of course, my wait for the footex was futile as signallers diverted it away from its booked route taking the Northampton/Long Buckby route with me going home disappointed!

390118, VT 16.18 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston, Milton crossing
390118 sweeps under a rather over-engineered footbridge that takes a little-used footpath over the WCML fast lines between the villages of Roade and Blisworth. I photographed the 16.18 Liverpool to Euston service whilst waiting for a returning footex from Wembley to Crewe. Alas, it was diverted away on to the Northampton loop line at Hanslope Junction so my teatime trip out was rather a waste of time.

390130, VT 17.17 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street, Milton crossing
Having seen (briefly through the trees) and heard the familiar sound of a Class 47 hauling a returning footex (the purpose of my late afternoon trip out) in the distance taking the Northampton line thus avoiding my chosen spot I headed for home. As I did so I turned my camera one last time to photograph Virgin's 390130 passing between Roade and Blisworth with the 17.17 Euston to Liverpool service. I can console myself with the fact that the weather is poor with very 'flat' and grey conditions.
