A last-minute change of plan due to weather-related issues meant that I was able to get out and see the more local Cumbrian Mountain Express. I had intended to drive west and see LSL's HST working The Highland Pullman but that was cancelled due to extreme weather warnings in Scotland that precipitated ScotRail closing virtually the entire network. Initially, I thought that this was a little of an overreaction but in the event there were some serious problems affecting both roads and the rail networks so the call was probably correct. This disappointment was partially made up by 86259, which usually hauls the CME being substituted by one of WCR's 57s. Whilst Scotland and the north experienced terrible weather this day was sunny and unseasonably warm in the south!

90012 & 90007, 02.57 Felixstowe North-Garston (4M45, 38E), between Roade & Ashton
Catching the very first vestiges of early morning sun the 4M45 02.57 Felixstowe to Garston Freightliner passes between Roade and Ashton. 90012 and 90007 lead the train but for how much longer given that Freightliner has announced their intention to reduce the electric haulage of their services due to the increasing cost when compared to diesel that is until that situation is reversed again!

66546, 03.25 Garston-London Gateway (4L52, RT), between Roade & Ashton
At first glance this appears to be a light engine heading south of the WCML near the village of Roade however, close observation reveals a Freightliner flat behind the locomotive. 66546 leads the 4L52 03.25 Garston to London Gateway was particularly lightly loaded on this particular morning.

57012, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express, 06.48 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86, 24L) & 350235, LN 07.38 Milton Keynes Central-Birmingham New Street (1Y13, RT), between Roade & Ashton
So close to being bowled, by two trains! A London Northwestern Desiro had just gone south on the up slow with its tail having just gone out of view as 57012 and 350235 vie for the lead heading north. 57012 is leading the outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express that left London at 06.48 heading for Carlisle and carrying the 1Z86 headcode in a nod to its usual traction, 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan'. As the train passed me 350235 just drew level with the locomotive so my positioning at this spot was extremely lucky!
