I managed to get out just before work to capture two interesting special workings passing close to home. Luckily, the sun was out which was a welcome event given the appalling weather that had characterised July! Let's hope that August brings some sunshine and dry days!

66531, 02.50 Felixstowe North-Garston (4M45, 39E), site of Roade station
The 4M45 02.50 Felixstowe to Garston Freightliner passes the site of Roade station with 66531 leading. This is a six days per week service on this route and was particularly well loaded this morning.

66523, 03.39 Garston-London Gateway (4L52, 2L), site of Roade station
66523 bursts into the sunshine at the southern end of Roade cutting leading the 03.39 Garston to London Gateway 4L52 Freightliner service. This is a preferred location for southbound trains at this time of day on a sunny morning but has been made more tricky in the last year by the installation of an anti-climb parapet installed by Network Rail so some short steps are no required.

66523, 03.39 Garston-London Gateway (4L52, 2L) & 66783, 03.10 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (4M18, 3E), site of Roade station
A passing of freights at Roade sees 66523 heading south leading the 03.39 Garston to London Gateway 4L52 as Biffa liveried 66783 'The Flying Dustman' heads north with the 4M18 03.10 Felixstowe to Trafford Park service. The latter of these Class 66s is not one that I have very many photographs of and so was a little dispapointed to get this distant one at Roade!

150202, 07.44 Wolverton Centre Sidings-Exeter St. David's MPD (5Z50, 6L), site of Roade station
I am not sure as to what work Gemini Rail Services UK Limited at Wolverton Works has been undertaking but having been completed 150202 is seen returning home passing Roade a short distance after leaving. The GWR unit was running as 5Z50 and rather unusually was returning to Exeter St. David's via Birmingham and then the Midland route via Cheltenham and Bristol rather than the more direct route south and then the GWML.

66597, 04.59 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L41, 17E), Ashton Road bridge
66597 'Viridor' is about to pass under Ashton Road bridge just south of Roade leading the 04.59 Trafford Park to Felixstowe Freightliner. This spot needs some pruning du to the growth of the bush in the foreground. Indeed, after this photgraph was taken and having my tools in the car, I was able to do some cutting back but need to return again soon.

70005 & 70004, 06.14 Crewe Basford Hall-Southampton MCT (4O14, 27L), Ashton Road bridge
With the Great Western route, through Oxford shut again the diversion of freight that uses that route was once again taking place along the WCML. However, unlike the last closure that lasted some months due to the collapse of the Thames crossing at Nuneham this time it is only for this week for works in and around Oxford station. The diverted 4O14 06.14 Crewe Basford Hall to Southampton passes just south of Roade with consecutively numbered 70005 and 70004 leading. Only the leading Class 70 appeared to be under power.
