Freight diversions on the fast lines thus avoiding Northampton are always worth venturing out for. With some smashing weather, continuing a run of warm and sunny days I popped out locally to capture one such working.

390046, VT 13.47 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B44, 6L), site of Roade station
Under glorious clear blue skies, 390046 passes the site of Roade's former station working AWC's 13.47 Birmingham New Street to Euston service.

221107, VT 13.32 Chester-London Euston (1A33, RT), site of Roade station
A single set Voyager in the form of 221107 passes the site of Roade station working the 13.32 Chester to Euston Avanti West Coast service. The days of these tired units operating such services are strictly numbered now with the testing of their replacements, the bi-mode A-Trains underway but software problems (or the like) will probably delay their introduction as is usually the case!

221106, VT 14.15 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G26, RT), site of Roade station
221106 spoils the afternoon peace and quiet of the village of Roade passing with the 14.15 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. I have questioned it before but had no response, what is the thinking behind running an expensive to run diesel unit under fully energised wiring for one hundred ad twelve miles between the UK's largest two cities? The sooner that these dreadful units are taken out of service later this year the better!

66785, 13.33 Wembley Reception-Hams Hall (4G13, 37L) (ex London Gateway, 4M12), site of Roade station
With the Northampton loop closed for engineering works the little freight that was scheduled to pass through the lower end of the WCML was forced to take the Weedon loop known as the 'old route'. 66785 is seen passing Roade nearly three-quarters of an hour late with the re-scheduled 13.33 Wembey Reception to Hams Hall service running as 4G13. This should have originated from London Gateway and run throughout as 4M12 but something obviously went wrong earlier in the day.

390121, VT 14.29 London Euston-Carlisle (1S72, 16L), site of Roade station
Instantly recognisable as 390121 'Opportunity' the uniquely wrapped Avanti Pendolino passes Roade working the 1S72 14.29 Euston to Carlisle service. This train would normally run through to Carlisle but the northern end of the WCML was closed for the completion of extensive engineering and remodelling works at Carstairs.
