28. A Deltic on the WCML……!-21.04.23

This particular move did not attract much attention which was a bit of a surprise. There was a one-way non-advertised InterCity charter from King’s Cross to Edinburgh that was going to be hauled by one of the preserved Deltics. As I was due to work on this day I was unable to go and see it on its former ECML stomping ground so I had to put up with the ecs move up the WCML from Crewe to London. It did mean I had to phone in and say that I was going to be a little late for work but a Deltic trumps just about anything including earning money! Unfortunately, the weather did not play ball but never mind!

66148, 04.00 Wakefield Europort-Southampton Western Docks (4O43, 71L), Victoria bridge
Due to the lengthy closure and protracted repairs to the abutments that carry Nuneham viaduct that spans the Thames just north of Culham between Oxford and Didcot all freight has been diverted with the WCML taking most of the strain. This has brought all sorts of interesting freight close to home that is not usually captured by my lens. One such example is seen passing Victoria bridge just south of Roade is the 4O43 04.00 Wakefield Europort to Southampton Western Docks led by 66148 ‘Maritime Intermodal Seven’

D9000 (55022), 07.10 Crewe HS-London King's Cross (5Z54, 10E), Victoria bridge
What a sight (and sound!) to behold! D9000 (55022) ‘Royal Scots Grey’ passes Victoria bridge between Roade and Ashton leading a set of LSL’s fine reproduction InterCity stock that includes their recently unveiled DBSO 9701. The Deltic was leading the 5Z54 07.10 Crewe HS to King’s Cross empty stock move with 90001 ‘Royal Scot’ on the rear. The sight and sound of a Deltic never fails to disappoint especially when the driver was giving it some beans as he was here having just climbed the steady rising grade from Northampton and through Roade cutting.

90001, 07.10 Crewe HS-London King's Cross (5Z54, 10E), Victoria bridge
Bringing up the rear of the 5Z54 07.10 Crewe HS to King’s Cross ECS 90001 ‘Royal Scot’ is not under power allowing Deltic D9000 ‘Royal Scots Grey’ to do all the work at the front. The stock was heading to King’s Cross via the North London line and a reversal at Hornsey in order to work a one-way private charter operated by LSL to Edinburgh via the ECML later in the day. Unfortunately, the Deltic gave trouble on the later run between Grantham and Newark with the electric having to give some assistance with the train arriving over an hour late into Waverley.
