On one of the first clear and bright mornings of the spring, I decided to trek out across a lightly frosted field from home to capture the sleeper service passing at its due tie. Recently, it has been subject to ECML diversions and delays, indeed only the previous day Andy witnessed it passing nearby Wolverton on the up-slow line exactly two hours late.

92023, CS 20.45 Inverness, 20.26 Aberdeen, 19.50 Fort William-London Euston (1M16, 10E), between Roade & Ashton
For once running to time, the up Caledonian ‘Highland’ Sleeper passes cold frosty fields between Roade and Ashton just forty minutes from its destination. Notice the shadow of me in the rather poor field of oil seed rape in the foreground created by the very low sun that has just risen above the horizon behind me.

350265 & 350232, LN 05.35 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (2Y09, 2L), between Roade & Ashton
Catching some welcome spring sunshine after what had been a very disappointing March and April, the 05.35 Euston to Birmingham London Northwestern unit approaches Roade. It is being worked by 350265 and 350232 that, in theory, should be off-lease by now and replaced by brand new shiny Class 730 Aventura units (that will operate around the Greater West Midlands), needless to say, this has not happened due to various issues with the new trains!

As the 05.35 Euston to Birmingham New Street clears right with 350232 still in view, the Avanti West Coast 06.16 Euston to Preston service is almost blocked from view. 390148 ‘Flying Scouseman’ is forming the 1S42 service that arrived right time at its destination just before 10.00 having covered two hundred and sixteen miles from London.

221107, VT 05.52 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1R02, 22L), between Roade & Ashton
With the Weedon line mysteriously closed overnight and with this closure still in place by morning trains were feeling the effect of this with them being diverted via Northampton and considerable time being added to their journeys. 221107 is the lead set of the 1R02 05.52 Birmingham to Euston service passing just south of Roade which should be between Tring and Berkhamsted by this time!
