With OpenTrainTimes showing the fast lines closed from Hanslope to Hillmorton Junctions (near Rugby) Network Rail was able to undertake various engineering works on the Weedon loop with all traffic diverted via Northampton. During the afternoon I was aware of all trains giving the obligatory toot warning track workers just across the field from home so I took a walk to find out what was going on.

390005, VT 11.47 Preston-London Euston (1M11, 13E), Victoria bridge
Eagle-eyed visitors will notice that Pendolino 390005 is running on the up slow line at Victoria bridge just north of Hanslope Junction. With the Weedon route closed for engineering works all traffic was being diverted via Northampton with adjusted timings to suit. The 1M11 11.47 Preston to Euston arrived fairly early at its destination with the generous retiming taking care of the re-routing.

Engineering work, site of Roade station
A Dooson Ultimate DX270 on hire from TXM Plant (Wigan) sits on the up fast line at the site of Roade’s former station undertaking some work associated with re-ballasting. In the distance, past the A508 road bridge, 66418 ‘Patriot - In Memory of Fallen Railway Employees’ waits at the head of a short ballast train to inch forward to deposit more stone.

66418, ballast train and engineering work, A508 bridge
Re-ballasting of the fast lines in Roade cutting is taking place with all traffic forced to use the slow lines to the right. This view, which includes 66418 ‘Patriot - In Memory of Fallen Railway Employees' top and tailing a relatively short ballast train made up of a rake of HQA(E) eight-tonne autoballaster hopper wagons, is taken from Roade’s A508 bridge

5. 66565, ballast train, Hyde Road bridge
Under power and at less than walking pace 66565 eases a partially loaded ballast train composed of a short rake of HQA(E) autoballasters back towards a work site at the site of Roade’s former station. With the driver of the 66 sitting in his seat facing the wrong way and running blind, communications would have been via mobile ‘phones no doubt

221110 and 221118, VT 14.18 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1T43, 1E) & 66565, ballast train, Hyde Road bridge
Voyagers 221110 and 221118 work the 14.18 Euston to Birmingham New Street Avanti West Coast on the down slow line that will take it via Northampton rather than the more normal Weedon loop. The reason is clear to see with engineering works closing the fast lines at Roade. 66565 is seen reversing a short rake of loaded HQA(E) ballast wagons back to the work site just beyond the A508 bridge in the village of Roade.

66565, ballast train, Hyde Road bridge
66565 continues to reverse at a walking pace along the down fast line at Roade seen from Hyde Road bridge. It is easing a short set of HQA(E) eight-tonne autoballasters back towards a work site where ballast was required.

DR73910, engineering work move, Hyde Road bridge
With the loaded train of autoballaster wagons having reversed at less than walking pace to the work site in Roade Colas’ universal tamping machine DR73910 ‘Jupiter’ follows at an equally slow pace. After ballasting later in the afternoon the unit will tamp the fresh stones and prepare the line for service again. Notice the orange-clad crew member sitting on the running board whilst on his mobile ‘phone; no doubt this sitting position would not be approved in the risk assessment!
