79. Wellingborough on the shortest day-21.12.21

Continuing my unwritten tradition of getting out on the shortest and longest day of the year to take some photographs took me to Wellingborough. This short trip out on the winter equinox followed a visit to Mike to exchange festive greetings and to enjoy a short catch up. The weather was characteristically dull and cold!

360105 & 360110, EM 11.40 Corby-London St. Pancras (1Y26, RT), Wellingborough station
EMR Connect's 360105 and 360110 draw into Wellingborough station working the 11.40 Corby to London St. Pancras service. Wellingborough now enjoys a half-hour service in both directions between London and Corby, unfortunately, since the launch of the electrified trains last spring the scourge of COVID-19 has meant passenger numbers have been way below expectations.

222020, EM 10.37 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C38, RT), Wellingborough station
222020 passes through Wellingborough station working the 10.37 Sheffield to St. Pancras EMR service. These Meridians have been in squadron service on the Midland route for a number of years and have proved to be reliable if not a little dull! They are set to be replaced with new build bi-mode units with the completion of electrification on the Market Harborough 'spur' that is now running very late. Indeed, the Tory Transport Secretary Grant Shapps made a misleading statement during a visit to Leicester on the day I took this photograph, see...... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-59729033 It was politically spun because the preparation for the electrification has been underway for many months now with spades already in the ground but it was made prior to an extended closure of the line over the coming festive break in order to undertake more extensive work.

360110, EM 11.40 Corby-London St. Pancras (1Y26, RT), Wellingborough station
The rear of the 1Y26 11.40 Corby to St. Pancras EMR Connect service leaves Wellingborough station. The lightly loaded service was being worked by 360110 at the rear with 360105 out of sight at the front. With the signal already having turned red the feather has gone off indicating that the train was moving from the up slow to the fast line at the scissor junction just around the curve south of Wellingborough station.

Reinstated canopy, Wellingborough station
Back in the winter of 2020, I photographed the carnage at Wellingborough station with the removal of the superb Midland Railway canopies, see...... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/28700323804/platform-1-wellingborough-station However, since then they have been reproduced to the same design and replaced by Network Rail. To complete the job the glazing panels need to be installed to give the passengers on the platform the protection that they should be afforded.

360108, EM 11.15 London St. Pancras-Corby (1Y21, 1L), Wellingborough station
360108 arrives at a cold and dull Wellingborough station working the 1Y21 11.15 St. Pancras to Corby EMR Connect service. I find that photographs taken at Wellingborough station give the impression that I have tilted the camera from the horizontal. However, observation of verticals such as lamp posts reveals that this is an optical illusion created by the cant of the tracks, particularly the down fast line, through the station.

222005, EM 11.32 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F32, RT), Wellingborough station
EMR Meridian 222005 passes through Wellingborough station working the 11.32 St. Pancras to Sheffield service. This purple EMR paint scheme will be the final one that these units will carry while in operation on the MML before coming off-lease next year to be replaced by new-build IET bi-mode trains. Notice the recently reinstated reproduction Midland Railway canopies above the Meridian.

222007, EM 11.35 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D33, RT), Wellingborough station
222007 passes slowly through Wellingborough station's platform one working the 11.35 St. Pancras to Nottingham service. It was running at a much-reduced speed on caution signals due to it being very close behind the previous Sheffield service that itself was delayed by a local Corby stopper that had been pathed on the fast line rather than the slow.
