49. 'The Settle & Carlisle Pullman'-21.08.21

On yet another appallingly dark and dismal August morning (something that has characterised the summer of 2021) I took a drive from home to the Midland Mainline just south of Market Harborough to capture the passage of 'The Settle & Carlisle Pullman' being worked by LSL's super Pullman liveried HST. I was keen to get it away from the intrusive wires of the recently completed electrified route as far as Kettering and Corby hence my trek! After a coffee in Market Harborough, I visited the recently re-modeled station in preparation for the arrival of the wires.

222023, EM 07.02 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F10, RT), Braybrooke SP769849
In appalling light that has needed a fair bit of Photoshop 'treatment' to get it presentable EMR's 222023 works the 07.02 St. Pancras to Sheffield service. It is passing Braybrooke, a small village right on the Northamptonshire and Leicestershire county boundary. The photograph is taken from a huge and somewhat over-engineered steel bridge that carries a bridleway across the line that I think sees a limited number of horse riders passing over it. The large area of flat and cleared land in the foreground is where a large and important power supply building will be constructed as part of the electrification programme.

222009 EM 07.12 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B16, 1E), Braybrooke SP769849
The 07.12 Nottingham to St. Pancras EMR service passes Braybrooke just south of Market Harborough worked by 222009. The light was so dire at this location with some very threatening grey clouds pushing in from the northwest that I had to ramp up the camera's ISO to an eye-watering 8000 and that was only using a shutter speed of 1/1600 of a second - and this is the third week of August!

With a worksite associated with the forthcoming electrification of this section of line in the background 222020 heads north working EMR's 07.05 St. Pancras to Nottingham 1D11 service. The train is seen on an incredibly dull August morning passing near the Northamptonshire village of Braybrooke a short distance south of Market Harborough.

43055, outward leg The Settle & Carlisle Pullman, 06.18 London St. Pancras-Carlisle (1Z50, 1L), Braybrooke SP769849
With its Nanking blue paint scheme lifting the light on an otherwise grey and dull August morning the outward leg of Midland Pullman's 'The Settle and Carlisle Pullman' passes Braybrooke just south of its next stop at Market Harborough. The train is being led by 43055 a former East Midlands HST power car that is on its old stomping ground that it will have travelled on many times in its working career. At the rear of the train, that left St. Pancras at 06.18 heading for Carlisle, is a second former East Midlands power car 43046.

Frontage, Market Harborough station
John Livock really went to town on his design of Market Harborough's second station opened by the LNWR in 1884 replacing an earlier station at a complicated junction of several lines in the town. In 1975 it was Grade II listed and in 1981 it underwent an extensive restoration. On a visit back in 1980, I took a time exposure of the station standing in a similar position to where I am on this occasion, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29663553604/frontage-market-harborough-station

222022, EM 08.50 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B25, RT), Market Harborough station
Network Rail has been working hard at Market Harborough station over the last few years to raise line speeds and prepare it for forthcoming electrification. The old curved and cambered tracks that passed through the station have been replaced by straight rails and longer platforms with bi-directional signalling installed and a new crossover to the north of the station. 222022 arrives at Market Harborough with the 1B25 08.50 Nottingham to St. Pancras service.

222015, EM 08.32 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F17, RT), Market Harborough station
Still wearing its East Midlands Train livery 222015 passes through Market Harborough station working the 08.32 St. Pancras to Sheffield 'fast' service. With new bi-mode Class 810 trains on order and due for delivery towards the end of next year (2022) it is likely that EMR and the owners of the units, Eversholt Rail, will spend little on them including repainting.

222010, EM 08.35 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D18, 2L), Market Harborough station
222010 arrives at the extensively remodeled Market Harborough station with the 08.35 St. Pancras to Nottingham service. There was a surprisingly large number of passengers waiting on platform one to board the train making it look more like a commuter service than a weekend train - further evidence of the changing nature of rail travel perhaps? It is interesting that the train is pulling into the station at exactly an hour to the minute after it left London.

Former goods yard entrance, Market Harborough
This road just adjacent to the eastern side of Market Harborough station leads to the new and huge station car park as well as a fast-growing industrial and trading estate. Back in 1980 I took a very similarly positioned photograph of a large BR (Midland) enamel sign. All has changed except for the telegraph poles being the only reference features remaining, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29672754804/enamel-market-harborough-goods-yard

Site of Little Bowden signal box
With the northern end and termination of the Brampton Valley Way in the foreground the former level crossing of the Northampton to Market Harborough line is seen beyond the gate. The trees in the centre mark the site of the former Little Bowden signal box that I photographed back in 1980 standing in a very similar position, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29672750004/little-bowden-crossing-signal-box

Ontheupfast, site of Little Bowden signal box
A tricky photograph to execute! It shows my 1980 photograph on this website (https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29672750004/little-bowden-crossing-signal-box) with the site as seen today. The former Little Bowden signal box seen all those years ago was shut a year later in 1981 when the former LNWR route from Northampton to Market Harborough line was closed. However, the box lives on now being located on the platform of the Northampton and Lamport Railway heritage line.
